  • 🎧Biophilic co-design for mental health: Episode 2 of Up Property’s new podcast. We’re excited to share this wide-ranging interview about co-designing for mental health at Barwon Health’s Mental Health Hub in Geelong. CHC Senior Interior Designer Stephanie Clarke and developer Marcus Jankie of Up Property delve deep into the nuances, surprises and impact of co-designing biophilic spaces with clinicians and consumers with lived experience. How have adaptive reuse, trauma-informed design and co-design with clinicians and consumers with lived experience helped transform a derelict arcade in central Geelong into an exemplar of biophilic design for mental health? Steph & Marcus unpack the way colours, shapes and patterns regularly used in biophilic interiors designed for nature connection and wellbeing can inadvertently trigger negative associations. “We learned what a nuanced approach to colour, patterning and degrees of abstraction looked like for this group,” Steph says. “Connecting the interior environment to the natural environment was really important to them, but we had to avoid anything too abstract or hyper-realistic and create beautiful, semi-abstract touch points throughout the spaces to add to the overall design.” Listen here: https://lnkd.in/g6PzXwZh #adaptivereuse #traumainformeddesign #codesign #biophilicdesign #livedexperience #mentalhealth #mentalhealthdesign #healthcaredesign #designformentalhealth #colourtheory #designforhealth #psychologyofcolor

  • It’s been another big year of growth and transformation at CHC. We’re delighted to share the promotion of three emerging leaders in our Melbourne and Sydney studios. Karrie Williams steps into the role of Associate in our Health team in Melbourne. Karrie has had an incredible design journey so far, progressing from small refurbishments to $150m new builds in just seven years. She’s highly regarded for responsive design, cross-sector collaboration, deft problem solving, technical skills and team mentoring. She also loves learning, which is fortunate because in healthcare no two projects are ever the same, and there are always more nuances to understand about our clients, their highly specific needs, and the forces shaping the rapidly changing healthcare environment. Nicholas Simmonds in our Melbourne Health team has also been promoted to the role of Associate. Nick’s talent for complex problem solving is a major asset in the highly technical field of health design. From new specialist health facilities to major hospital redevelopments, he guides projects through all phases with an eagle eye for quality, sequencing and standards. Nick has a natural ability to make the complex simple, a thirst for knowledge and a resourcefulness that helps him take projects to the next level. Jake Le Lievre takes on a Senior Architect role in our Sydney team. His broad knowledge and construction expertise have been central to the success of our growing Sydney team. Jake’s architectural and masterplanning experience incorporates mixed use and retail, commercial, health, hospitality, community, education, residential, and sport. Cross-disciplinary coordination, inclusivity and designing with Country are his cornerstones. “With my life being affected by physical disability, I try to champion universal design in my work,” he says. At University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Jake teaches humanitarian design in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders. Over the past two years he’s led two semesters of student projects with Torres Strait Islanders on Saibai Island, and guided students working with the Yirrganydji people in Far North Queensland via the Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation. Please join us in congratulating our new senior leadership team members!

  • Thanks Parlour Inc: gender, equity, architecture for featuring us in your new BCorp series. Great to be sharing some of the impact this global network is having on our industry and awesome to see its growing influence in the design industry.

New in our equity in practice series: B Corps – sustainability and a deeper sense of purpose… ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects has been a proud B Corp since 2016, integrating ethical practices, sustainability and a healthy workplace culture into the everyday running of the business. Practice Director Courtney Smith and Quality Manager Anna James discuss the logistics, benefits and shared sense of purpose that come with being part of the global B Corp movement. “We became a B Corp because we recognised it aligned with our values. For-profit firms often face pressure to forgo social and environmental goals in favour of maximising profits. Being a B Corp is about finding ways to ensure equal opportunities for all, from diversity of staff to ownership structures and engagement of third-party suppliers. We believe businesses can be both profitable and ethical and we’re proof that it works.” Slide for images and more quotes, but also read the full article – https://lnkd.in/gx56kHUa #equityinpractice #bcorp #bcorporation #socialresponsibility #environmentalresponsibility #sustainability #ethicalleadership #collaboration #meaningfulrelationships

  • We are delighted to share our project, Moonee Ponds Primary School, has won the Modernisation Small category & the People’s Choice award at the 2024 Learning Environments Australasia Victoria & Tasmania Chapter Awards. Here’s what the judges had to say: “This imaginative and delightful modernisation brings new life to an historic section of the school, confidently delivering on the vision to create bright, interactive spaces that foster collaboration, inclusivity, and student engagement. The judging panel commends the design team and the school leadership for embarking on a strong planning and engagement process that involved students, staff and the community and delivered a strong conceptual approach. The ‘chain of ponds’ narrative, derived from the Aboriginal meaning of the schools name ‘Moonee’, has translated well into a conceptual model for the learning environment and provides a rich metaphor for the arrangement and creation of unique, fluid and interactive learning spaces that no doubt spark creativity and inspire joyful learning for their students.” A huge congratulations to the entire Moonee Ponds PS project team! • We are delighted to share our project, St Joseph’s College, has picked up a Commendation in the New Campus with Educational Facilities category at the 2024 Learning Environments Australasia Victoria & Tasmania Chapter Awards. Here’s what the judges had to say: “St Joseph’s College project, which consisted of a reimagination of a 138 year old heritage campus, could rely on a solid and consistent planning process involving a wide engagement of actors. As a key outcome, the design is based on an interesting mix of assets inspired by the heritage campus, and innovative components which ensure flexibility, inclusivity and well-being. The jury especially appreciated how this project gave attention to the history and the essence of the institution.” A huge congratulations to the entire St Joseph’s project team! Simon Le Nepveu. • Designing URBNSURF Sydney has been a dream come true for our Sydney team.  Sydney’s first surf park – Australia’s second – is the first in the world designed as a day-trip destination combining sporting, leisure, training, hospitality, retail and community facilities. It’s a unique typology, and we drew on our urban design experience to bring a dynamic, engaging mix into the masterplan.  Combining sporting, leisure, training, hospitality, retail and community facilities URBNSURF Sydney is designed by ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects and OCULUS Landscape Architecture, and features world-leading Wavegarden technology that generates authentic waves with settings for all abilities.  This project is a key component of the city’s ongoing renewal of the Olympic Park Precinct. World-class training facilities are proving popular with elite athletes and pro surfers. But this mixed-use destination is proudly designed for the rest of us too: from absolute beginners to regular surfers, schools, families, community groups and tourists. “Designing a wave park of this calibre is a unique journey, and to undertake that, it required a specialised team who could bring our vision to life,” says URBNSURF CEO Jennifer Vandekreeke. “The space needed to pump out perfect waves guaranteed year-round, be a wellness and leisure precinct, as well as a destination for food and event lovers. We chose ClarkeHopkinsClarke as our designer partner for this project because we knew they could help take our ideas and create a space that was purpose-built and welcoming to anyone who walks through the park gates.”  You can read more on Architecture & Design (Australia) here: https://lnkd.in/g_ABjb3f Jordan Curran, Lauren Bell, Oswaldo Marcelo Photography by Established ID

  • Our Health team were thrilled to attend the opening of Barwon Health’s new Central Geelong Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub this week. Designed in response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Mental Health, co-designing with people with lived experience of mental health was a cornerstone of our design process from the very beginning. You can hear more about the Central Geelong Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub in Up Property’s debut podcast episode which explores the biophilic design principles at the heart of this project, and the impacts of nature connection through design. Marcus Jankie speaks to our very own Justin Littlefield, as well as members of the research team at Deakin University, Geelong State MP Chris Couzens, and the State Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas. A great conversation to listen to on R U OK? Day and a timely reminder to check in on yourself and those around you. https://lnkd.in/gQ8jpBUk

We are thrilled to announce the official opening of the Central Geelong Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub – bringing together a range of mental health services under one roof in the heart of Geelong's CBD. Officially opened this week by Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt MP, the Hub features a multidisciplinary team of clinical and lived experience staff, offering a wide range of services, such as assessments, therapies, care planning, education, peer support, and more. Our vision is to have 'no wrong door' for people accessing our services, and bringing together services in one location means once people walk through the front door, they can get the care they need. The Hub is currently home to the Greater Geelong and Queenscliffe Mental Health and Wellbeing Local, Drugs and Alcohol Services (including Harm Reduction), Clozapine and Therapy Services, and soon the Bellarine and Geelong West Community Mental Health teams will commence at the Hub.
