  • Please see below an important notice from Lighting Council Australia. Hybrid photoluminescent exit signs are not direct replacements for traditional exit signs. An alarming practice is emerging regarding the installation of hybrid photoluminescent exit signs in a manner non-compliant with Australian regulations and under the guise of providing energy and sustainability benefits. When a hybrid photoluminescent exit sign is used to replace an existing traditional exit sign, an additional emergency luminaire must, in almost all cases, be installed within 2 metres of the hybrid photoluminescent exit sign. Failure to do so means an emergency lighting system will not comply with clause 4.5 of AS/NZS 2293.1 and cannot meet the Deemed to Satisfy provisions of the National Construction Code (NCC E4D1 and E4D4). The only alternative to this is a documented Performance Solution, which may need to be undertaken pursuant to a building permit / development application. Traditional exit signs are typically dual-function products and incorporate the emergency luminaire function. Hybrid photoluminescent exit signs are single function only (i.e. exit sign only) and do not incorporate an emergency luminaire function. Emergency lighting is a legal requirement and is critical for life safety. During a power failure or emergency evacuation it enables occupants to way-find safely, avoid hazards, negotiate changes in direction along exit paths, quickly open exit doors and provides light for emergency personnel. Non-compliance with correct emergency lighting installation and maintenance exposes persons to risk of serious injury or death. Alteration to an existing, approved AS/NZS2293.1 installation requires careful consideration as it will trigger a Performance Solution. Also, for this reason, penalties for noncompliance, which may apply to employers, tenants, building owners and building managers, can be severe. The maximum penalties under WHS legislation in each state for serious breaches provide for fines up to $3 million for corporations, and fines up to $350,000 and 5 years imprisonment for individuals (with even higher penalties in some states). Where non-compliance results in a death, more serious penalties apply if workplace manslaughter has been committed. Sustainability When correctly installed under AS/NZS2293.1, with an additional emergency luminaire installed within 2 metres, the installation of a hybrid photoluminescent exit sign typically results in the use of more power and provides a less sustainable solution.* *See the independent audit by WSP Consultants. Summary available on request from Lighting Council Australia. Maintenance State legislation requires that emergency lighting and exit signs are maintained in accordance with AS/NZS2293.2. A hybrid photoluminescent exit sign is also subject to these maintenance and inspection procedures, including inspections and simulating power loss to exit signs every 6 months to ensure they are op...

  • At Clevertronics, we're dedicated to sustainability and minimising our impact on landfill, which is why we're excited to announce that we'll be trialing an Australian-produced carton skid to replace the traditional wooden skids in our manufacturing process. Disposing of wooden pallets has always been a challenge for manufacturing companies, with many taking up unnecessary space in landfill. As Gerhard Fehle, our Operations Manager, notes, ‘’the switch to cardboard-based pallets holds significant sustainability benefits, as they can be easily recycled after use.‘’ We've already begun trialing these carton skids with some local customers, with the aim of gathering feedback for any improvements and then integrating them into our ongoing operations. #sustainability #emergencylighting
