We’re excited to have supplied the sustainable fabric for the blinds at Liverpool Civic Place Library, also known as Yellamundie, which is a world finalist for the "Public Library of the Year" award. This prestigious competition celebrates libraries that excel in design, sustainability, and community impact. The blinds are crafted with Sea-Tex fabric, made from 50% recycled ocean-bound plastic, and are printed with VOC-free, GREENGUARD Gold certified ink. This not only contributes to a healthier space but also enhances the library’s aesthetic. fjcstudio’s Principal recently spoke about the custom blinds design in an interview on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)'s Sunday Extra. When choosing roller blind fabrics, it's important to understand the benefits of metallised versus non-metallised dark fabrics. You don't necessarily need high-performance metallised fabrics for effective glare control. Darker colour screen roller blind fabrics naturally offer a lower Visual Light Transmittance (VLT) value. This means they allow less light to pass through, providing better glare control. Opting for non-metallised dark fabrics can be a cost-effective solution while still achieving the desired comfort and functionality in your space. #education #fabrics #sustainability #reduceglare

Have you considered the importance of Chain of Custody? While many fabrics can have recycled content, it is important to understand where their recycled content originates from. Some fabrics use Pre-Consumer recycled content versus Post-Consumer recycled content. The chain of custody documentation and certification is key to finding out the origins of the recycled content and verifying any recycled material claims. #chainofcustody #sustainability #certification #recycled

Welcome back to our “Avoiding Greenwashing” Series - Understanding certifications While many are starting to adopt the Best Environmental Practice PVC label, it is important to acknowledge the continued presence of PVC in the product. One of the main concerns is PVC particles disrupt the messaging system of the body, harm reproductive health, and contribute to asthma and developmental problems. PVC can also contain dangerous chemical additives including phthalates, lead, cadmium, and/or organotins, which are used to stabilise the product and can be harmful. These toxic additives are dangerous and can evaporate into the air over time. Whilst Best Environmental Practice PVC is better than standard PVC, there are many other choices in the market that have no PVC. #sustainability #fabrics #certification #pvcfree

In honour of the progress of COP28 , we’ve decided to create a series of educational tips for choosing sustainable fabrics, which we’ve decided to call “Avoiding Greenwashing”. Transparency is key! When assessing fabrics, consider the manufacturing mill's practices, energy sources, water usage, and the supply chain. While opting for mills with solar power is a positive step, transparency through certifications like cradle to cradle and chain of custody is crucial. It is important to consider the entire supply chain – from raw materials, production of yarn, weaving of the fabric and coating to the final product. Anyone can claim the "net zero" label, but only a few can verify it.
