The "Heart of Mumbai," - Dharavi plays a pivotal role in the narrative of India's circular economy. It is one of the largest informal settlements in the world and a global example of grassroots circularity in action. With an admirable modest infrastructure, Dharavi is thriving with informal industries that epitomize the principles of reuse, recycling, and resource efficiency. India also presents significant opportunities for Australia to collaborate on advancing the circular economy. This collaboration could address pressing challenges in sustainability, resource efficiency, and waste management while fostering innovation and economic growth. As our CEO, Peter Castellas, embarks on his journey through India, we join him in celebrating the boundless ingenuity, imagination, and inventiveness that thrive in unexpected places. These often-overlooked spaces, brimming with resourcefulness, may very well hold the keys to solving some of our most pressing global challenges. #circulareconomy #india #globalchallenges #CIF2025
Inspiration can sometimes come from the most unlikely places. Dharavi, India’s largest slum in Mumbai is a testament to the power of necessity driving innovation. Amidst a population of 1 million crammed into 2 sq Km, there over 15,000 single room factories, and 5,000 enterprises. The major industry is dedicated to recycling and sorting Mumbai’s waste. Dharavi, an unlikely poster child for India’s sustainability drive, employs 250,000 people just for this. 80% of Mumbai’s solid waste is recycled and given new life within Dharavi. Economic output is US$1billion pa. Deep in the depths of the slum, a phenomenal circular economy thrives. We can learn from and be inspired by the stories from Dharavi. As the global climate crisis bites hard, it will necessitate the next wave of technological change, investment and innovation. I’m more excited than ever to see the best of Australia’s climate solution innovation on show at the Climate Investor Forum -19 March in Melbourne. https://lnkd.in/g4akxWWG Hope to see you there.
