CME’s Alyce Cockram couldn’t resist a quick visit to the Port of Port Hedland during some stakeholder catch-ups in the Pilbara today. In the foreground you can see a petrified crocodile washed up on the foreshore after ex-tropical Cyclone Zelia... not really. We actually think it might be manmade and have been there for quite some time, although we can’t be sure. Far more interesting, however - for the number crunchers anyway - is the very large ship laden with iron ore in the background. Did you know the Port of Port Hedland is the world’s largest bulk export port by tonnage and has a single-entry channel which extends for approximately 40 kilometres. With 19 operational berths accommodating close to 3400 vessel visits in FY24, the port boasted 573 million tonnes of throughput worth an estimated $115.8 billion. We wonder what our crocodile mate thinks of that.

The WA Country Health Service is reporting increased risk of mosquito-related flaviviruses such as Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) in the Pilbara and Kimberley following recent heavy rainfall and cyclone-related flooding. Sentinel chicken surveillance has detected the flaviviruses around Newman, Tom Price and Karratha since the start of 2025. One human case of MVE has also been detected in the Pilbara so far this year, a middle-aged overseas traveller who required hospital admission. Last year, WA recorded two deaths from MVE in the Pilbara in working aged people. Pilbara and Kimberley residents, as well as FIFO workers, are being encouraged to take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
