Research commissioned by the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) has found that Australia’s economy would be up to $17 billion bigger with an accelerated rollout of thermal efficiency upgrades, electrification and rooftop solar to low-income housing. The report concludes that an accelerated home energy upgrade program could drastically reduce energy poverty for people struggling to heat and cool their housing. Large scale investment would deliver ongoing and significant energy bill savings, create thousands of jobs and supercharge the energy transition. More evidence why the 'Rent Like You Own' model of co-operative housing should be supported by Government. Recent research by the Australian Housing and Research Institute (AHURI) has found that while 78% of Australian renters wanted to buy a home, 59% didn’t think they could, and the main reason renters wanted to buy a home was because they saw home ownership as their only option for a stable home. Co-operative housing provides the security of tenure renters want. This article outlines a speech by former treasury secretary, Dr Ken Henry to the Tax Institute where he criticised policymakers for what they've done to the tax system and economy during the past two decades, and how it has led to younger people not faring nearly as well as "Boomers" were at their age, especially when it comes to housing. He stated that: "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘸𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘏𝘌𝘊𝘚 𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘺 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦, 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘢𝘹-𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘹-𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘹𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴."
