About us
Our vision is a world without CTE, and concussion safety without compromise. The Concussion Legacy Foundation Australia (CLF Australia) was founded by Chris Nowinski, PhD, Michael Buckland, MBBS, PhD, and Alan Pearce, PhD. CLF Australia was launched in September 2022 by Executive Director Annitta Siliato. Annitta has developed and lead the expansion of CLF’s work in Australia by building productive relationships with the sporting codes, government bodies and community interest groups to encourage better understanding and change. CLF Australia supports concussion and CTE research while translating new research findings into education programs, policies, and initiatives to allow sports to be played more safely. To date, CLF has facilitated a wide array of social and scientific research on concussion and CTE in sport, including the lived experiences of concussion and CTE. CLF Australia is a part of the broader CLF family, with links in the United States, UK and Canada and has partnered with leading brain banks to study CTE as part of the CLF Global Brain Bank. CLF Australia is a proud supporter of and collaborator with the Australian Sports Brain Bank. Email: australia@concussionfoundation.org

What a day at Grange Golf Club for Concussion Legacy Foundation Australia charity Lowey Golf Day. A huge thanks to Wendy Smith and Vocus for organising and putting the day on as principal sponsor. To be on a panel with wayne phillips, John Platten, Alan Pearce PhD and Keith Thomas is huge imposter syndrome. Hearing these icons chat through concussion perspectives was bloody brilliant. Cant wait to hear the final funds raised! How good is Wendy’s self painted P Hughes portrait! A moving day.

SHAAKE: The game-changing concussion sign every coach and player needs to know. It’s the motion you often see after a hit to the head, when someone quickly shakes their head back and forth. SHAAKE could identify up to 33% of undiagnosed concussions which is why we’re calling on sports and medical organizations to immediately add it to their list of potential concussion signs.

For the first time in decades, we’re recognizing a new concussion sign that could identify up to 33% of undiagnosed concussions! Do you know about SHAAKE? You’ve probably noticed it on TV or even done it yourself. It’s the motion you often see after a hit to the head, when someone quickly shakes their head back and forth. Our CEO Christopher Nowinski, PhD decided to study and name it to help keep more athletes safe. Right now, it does not appear on any medical or sports organization’s list of potential concussion signs. Our new study says it should.

“He had early exposure and he had a lot of exposure and I think every parent should sit up and consider their child’s long-term brain health.” Keith Titmuss was diagnosed with stage 2 CTE at just 20 years old. He started playing rugby at age 5. The NRL rookie died due to exertional heat stroke following a 2020 training session. Dr. Michael Buckland with the Australian Sports Brain Bank, a member of the CLF Global Brain Bank, says he was stunned to find CTE in Titmuss’ brain. He says the finding should be a “wake-up call” to parents, and encourage sporting codes to strengthen concussion protocols and reduce contact in training. We thank the Titmuss family for donating Keith’s brain to advance research and inspire action to #EndCTE.

After a concussion, your brain needs time to heal. Rest in the first couple of days is crucial to recovery—both physically and mentally. Taking it easy now can prevent long-term issues down the road. 🧠💤 Looking for more?
