Supporting Indigenous land & sea management, Indigenous Protected Areas & Indigenous Rangers across Australia & beyond
About us
Country Needs People is a registered Australian non-profit working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander landholders to protect nature, support culture, create jobs and more by supporting community-based Indigenous land and sea management across Australia and beyond. We collaborate with a national and growing network of more than 41 traditional owner-led grassroots land and sea management groups, including Indigenous rangers. These groups – our partners network – manage the majority of Australia’s growing Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) estate which currently covers almost 75 million hectares of land and sea country from the temperate south to the tropical north of the continent. We also work internationally, with strong and ongoing relationships with like-minded organisations such as Land Needs Guardians and the Indigenous Leadership Initiative in Canada. Country Needs People keeps pressure on governments to deliver: ● Well-tailored, long-term and growing funding to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-based land and sea management sector ● Support for meaningful ongoing jobs where they are needed most, on traditional lands and from very remote locations (where there are few other employment opportunities) to regional and urban areas ● Appropriate policy settings to better support traditional landholders to strengthen their connection to Country and share their knowledge with future generations. We believe Australians of every background working together can help build a brighter future for our natural heritage by supporting the original owners and managers of the beautiful lands and seas we all call home.

We were up at Dulabed Malanbarra Yidinji Country recently with the Jawajawa Rangers and it’s such stunning Country you just want to stop and take it all in 🌴 But with so much work going on you won’t find the Jawajawa Rangers slowing down for even a second! They’re undertaking a tonne of work helping country thrive, including: cultural burning, revegetation and caring for cultural places in partnership with Queensland Parks Rangers. No wonder there is so much to do on Country! At the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area here are more than 3,300 species of plants and more than 700 species of vertebrate animals like the cassowary and tree kangaroos calling the Wet Tropics home - 88 of them found nowhere else on Earth. On top of this the Jawajawa Rangers are also engaging with young people and Elders through a language and cultural program in local primary schools and on-Country activities focusing on language and culture. Really great work to the Jawajawa Rangers and Dulabed Malanbarra Yidinji Aboriginal Corporation for their ongoing work caring for Country, Culture and people. We love to see it! 👍🏽 📷 Photos: Kerry Trapnell #indigenousrangers #environment #conservation #rangers #indigenous #firstnations #indigenousknowledge

Congratulations to our friends at Mayala Inninalang who have just launched their new Indigenous Protected Area. We’ve been pleased to work with Mayala over several years as they rebuild their presence on Country and the new IPA will be a key part of this. Shout out also to the Kimberley Land Council for their ongoing support of groups like Mayala through the Kimberley. Indigenous Protected Areas help Traditional Owners build a more resilient management approach across land and sea, that’s why we’ve been long term advocates for their expansion. Great to see this resulting in practical outcomes for Mayala 😎 #indigenousrangers #environment #conservation #rangers #indigenous #firstnations #indigenousknowledge

Sawfish are endangered around the world but they’re doing great in the Karajarri IPA 👍🏽 In fact there are so many they can even be a nuisance! 😄 Check out our new film about Karajarri Rangers on Country protecting Culture and the environment and give it a share for the ripper sawfish 🪚 🐟. What began as a salmon revitalisation project soon morphed into a sawfish study when rangers discovered how rare these curious creatures were. It's a great example of the important work Indigenous Rangers are doing on remote Country, and how scientists can work alongside Traditional Owners to protect our endangered species. Great job Team Karajarri! Film by Sam Frederick. 🤩It was great to catch up with so many desert mob out at the 2024 Indigenous Desert Alliance Conference last week at Uluru with 400 Indigenous Rangers, including heaps of our partner groups, coming together. It’s tough, remote work in the desert - Indigenous Rangers are caring for Country across 2.7 million square kilometres of IPAs - an area 3X the size of NSW! Our CEO Paddy O’Leary attended with our new team member Nathan Brennan, a Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Gamilaraay man working to support our partners. “Attending the 2024 Indigenous Desert Alliance Conference at Uluru was an incredible experience”, said Nath. “The workshops and sessions over the three days offered insights and invaluable opportunities to learn from the collective wisdom and expertise of the desert rangers and elders.” Among the many highlights for Nathan was the work led by women elders in traditional tracking programs, and also the collaborative work around species protection and predator management strategies for the Great Desert Skink. We look forward to seeing how these projects develop into the new year. Massive shout out to all our mates across the desert mobs and at IDA for all the hard yakka they put in caring for their beautiful desert Country. 🙌🏽 #indigenousrangers #desert #caringforcountry #Uluru
Biggest mob this side of the rock! 😎 Conference is well underway with lots of connection and exchange happening already. Yuwa palya! #2024idaconference

✊🏽Kimberley Women Rangers represent! We love hearing these stories of Australia's Indigenous Rangers representing on the world stage. These Kimberley Women Rangers headed to France recently, joining a number of super hardworking groups from Australia and across the world. "I’m listening to rangers who do the same line of work as us in their countries and witnessing the scale of the conservation efforts happening globally. It’s inspiring to hear their stories and to see their dedication to their work” said Tamara Moore, Bardi Jawi Oorany Rangers Coord. #Breaking. Really proud today as the first stage of our longstanding work to grow secure, quality, federally funded Indigenous Ranger jobs is announced, including our equity target for women by 2030. We know there is a hell of a lot of work to do to make sure these jobs are well supported, and community based organisations are funded to thrive, not just survive, so the hard work begins today- particularly we're keen to see govt rebuild their practical support for these groups as once was the case in the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water over a decade ago. There will be some groups that have missed out today, but we are working hard to create more opportunities in future. To the hundreds of traditional owners, ranger groups, elders and their supporters that are part of our ongoing work thankyou - this is a credit to your ongoing commitment to Country, culture and people. We can deliver big and great things when we work together, but we aren't complacent. Thanks to Ministers Malarndirri McCarthy and Tanya Plibersek for delivering the first part of your commitment, let's work together to strengthen this even further. https://lnkd.in/gPRsM-fa

No matter who wins this election on the weekend, we will be backing Indigenous Rangers. Queensland’s Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program is positive investment that delivers real benefits for every Queenslander. Right across the state Indigenous Rangers are caring for Country. Tackling feral animals, controlling weeds, protecting threatened species, managing fire, monitoring sea country. And importantly delivering active management of cultural values on land and sea that benefit from over 60,000 years of ongoing presence. Keep following us for updates and we will see you on the other side! #CountryNeedsRangers #queensland #qldelection #qldpol #auspol #environment #brisbane #cairns #townsville #lakeeyre #gordonvale #mareeba

A massive shout out to everyone involved with the new Ngurra Kayanta Indigenous Protected Area in Western Australia! 🥳 🎈📢 This IPA will be a cornerstone of Walmajarri, Wankajunga, and Manyjilyjarra people reinvigorating their connection with Country, stories, songs and re-establishing a management presence in these areas that are key havens for biodiversity. Well developed and well managed IPAs provide a strong foundation for two way governance, traditional owner leadership and solid collaborative relationships between traditional owners and other stakeholders. We're really proud to have played a small part in this journey but hats off to those that have worked through such a solid participatory planning process to get to this stage. Each IPA has its own story and there will be more hard work to come but so great to see this milestone reached for Ngurra Kayanta mob.
DSS are so proud to be able to share some exciting news on behalf of one of our clients, Ngurra Kayanta Aboriginal Corporation (NKAC). On 12th August 2024 the Australian Government officially recognised the dedication of their native title determination as an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA). Ngurra Kayanta country is in the remote environment of the Great Sandy Desert where very few non-Aboriginal people have ever visited. The Ngurra Kayanta IPA will contribute 1,955,132 hectares of Walmajarri, Wangkajunga and Manyjilyjarra country to Australia’s National Reserve System. Ngurra Kayanta’s vision for their IPA is that it “follows the old way” – a recognition that their strength comes from following their old people, the Jukurrpa, and cultural principles of belonging to country and looking out for one another. IPAs protect biodiversity and cultural resources into the future. They also provide employment, education and training opportunities for Indigenous people in remote areas, and many environmental, cultural, economic, health and wellbeing benefits to local communities. We have seen an enormous amount of hard work, passion and patience go into the consultation and on country planning of this IPA by Ngurra Kayanta people since 2021. DSS is excited to continue to support their emerging ranger team, who have been actively caring for their country since 2021, into a bright future. Congratulations to Ngurra Kayanta and their partners - National Indigenous Australians Agency, Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, The Nature Conservancy in Australia, Indigenous Desert Alliance, Country Needs People, Rangelands NRM. #Country #Culture #Conservation #Environment #WesternAustralia #Australia

Where do the pollies stand on QLD’s Indigenous Rangers? We’ve pressed all pollies and candidates to make public their position on supporting the Queensland Indigenous Land & Sea Rangers Program into the future, should they be elected. We’ve had responses from LNP, Labor, Greens, Katter’s Australian Party, One Nation and an Independent. Find out where the pollies and parties stand by checking the link below. 🙌🏽A big thank you to all our QLD supporters who’ve signed our petitions and shared our posts. Be assured that after the QLD Election, we will be keeping a close eye on whoever forms the newly elected government to ensure that they stick to their promises and are held accountable. We’ll never tell you how to vote, that’s your choice, but we will work to ensure all governments support Indigenous Rangers into the future. #queenslandelection #qldelection #queensland #cairns #brisbane #noosa #portdouglas #nwqueensland #sunshinecoast #goldcoast #townsville #mackay #mtisa
