📢 Free, walk-in mental health support has a new home in Gladstone Country to Coast, QLD Chief Executive Julie Sturgess was delighted to welcome the Australian Government’s Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health, The Hon. Emma McBride MP, to officially open new premises for the Gladstone Medicare Mental Health Centre, at 9 Derby St. Funded by Country to Coast, QLD, through the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care's PHN Program, the centre has been operated by national community services provider, Wellways Australia (in partnership with Clarity Health Care), since mid-July 2024 on an interim site and has already supported community with free, walk-in short- and medium-term mental health support. Thank you to Mayor Matt Burnett from Gladstone Regional Council who was also on hand to support this important community service. Fully staffed by mental health clinicians and support workers, the Gladstone Medicare Mental Health Centre is a safe and welcoming space open to anyone over the age of 18, who is in distress or seeking mental health support, without the need for referral or appointment. ‘You don't need an appointment. You don't need a referral nor diagnosis. You don’t even need a Medicare card. You can walk in just as you are and you’ll likely be greeted by a peer worker, someone who's walked in your shoes, who's had their own personal experience of mental ill health and is ready to help,’ Ms Sturgess said. Thank you to Wellways Chief Executive Laura Collister, Clarity Health Care Chief Medical Officer, Dr Matthew Warden and the Rockhampton team who have worked so hard to transition services and clients to the new premises. ‘Navigating the health system can sometimes be overwhelming. If you are looking for mental health support for yourself or someone you care about, your local Medicare Mental Health Centres can provide on-the-spot advice and guidance about the next step,’ Ms Sturgess said. ☀️The Queensland heat is on! ☀️ 📢 The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Heatwave Warning For South East Coast Queensland - Valid from Tuesday 21 to Friday 24 January 2025 for: Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Capricornia, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Wide Bay and Burnett Districts. With heatwaves warnings in place for many areas in the Country to Coast region this week, make sure you know the signs of heat-related stress and illness. Severe heatwaves can impact people working or exercising outdoors, children returning to school, babies, those with existing medical conditions and the elderly, especially those who live alone. Take care this week to keep cool and avoid heat-related illness, which can vary from relatively mild heat exhaustion to the potentially life-threatening condition of heat stroke. 😎 Tips to minimise the risk of heat-related illness: • Drink plenty of water and carry some with you when out and about. • Spend as much time as possible in cool or air-conditioned buildings (shopping centres, libraries, cinemas or community centres). • Keep yourself cool by using wet towels, putting your feet in cool water and taking cool (not cold) showers. • Block out the sun at home during the day by closing curtains and blinds. • Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen. • Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres like cotton and linen. • Avoid intense activity like exercise, renovating and gardening. • Watch or listen to news reports for more information. • Don’t forget your pets – give them a cool bath, wet towel to lie on, a place next to a fan and plenty of fresh water (even add some ice cubes) work just as well for animals. 🟢 Get Ready Queensland resources are online if you do need more support: https://bit.ly/3UFI006 #c2coastqld #heat #heatwave #centralqueensland #widebay #sunshinecoast #staycool
