The 2025 Forage Value Index (FVI) helps dairy farmers choose the most profitable ryegrass varieties. Using data from 37 sites across Australia, the FVI ranks perennial, annual and Italian ryegrass cultivars according to profitability. Over 70 varieties of ryegrass were trialled and ranked across the three ryegrass species, to provide an easy, accurate and independent assessment of their potential economic value to Australian dairy farmers. A collaborative research initiative between Dairy Australia, Agriculture Victoria and Gardiner Foundation, the DairyFeedbase First 100 Days project has recently published practical outcomes for dairy farmers on post-calving feeding strategies that can improve lactation performance and increase profitability.
