A systematic review comparing low carb diets to low fat diets has revealed that low carb diets led to greater reduction in HbA1c, superior weight loss, reductions in diabetes medication use and improved metabolic outcomes. So why isn't low carb freely prescribed? Good question...

The 1942 USA Dietary Guidelines: What can we learn today? 🍴 Did you know the 1942 dietary guidelines recommended "fats and sweets as you like them" with no limitations? Sounds indulgent, right? But context is everything. Back then, desserts were homemade, sugary snacks were rare, and "as you like them" often meant after a balanced meal—not all day long. 🥧 It's a far cry from today’s ultra-processed foods and constant marketing that push sugary snacks at every turn. Now, despite these relaxed recommendations, obesity and diabetes rates were much lower. Why? Let’s break it down: 👉 Lifestyle matters. In the 1940s, meals were mostly homemade, portion sizes were smaller, and people didn’t snack as frequently. Plus, physical activity was naturally part of daily routines. 👉 Food quality. The fats consumed were often from natural sources like butter and tallow, not processed oils or packaged foods. 👉 Less processed sugar and marketing. Unlike today, there wasn’t a billion-dollar industry dedicated to marketing sugary, ultra-processed snacks as daily essentials. The key takeaway from these guidelines? Our modern lifestyle may have taken us off track, but it’s never too late to make a change. By focusing on whole, minimally processed foods and mindful eating, we can still improve our health and even send conditions like type 2 diabetes into remission. Want to dive deeper into how we got nutrition so wrong and what we can do to get it right today? Check out Dr Peter Brukner’s insightful article. 👉 Read more: https://bit.ly/3ValnkG 💬 What do you think of these vintage guidelines? Do they hold any wisdom for us today?
