DSTG develops new Defence and national security capabilities, and enhances existing capabilities by increasing performance and safety and reducing the cost of ownership of Defence assets. We work collaboratively with other science and government agencies to strengthen national security and assist industry to become better at supporting Defence's capability needs. Headed by the Chief Defence Scientist, DSTG employs around 2,100 staff, predominantly scientists, engineers, IT specialists and technicians. DSTG has a presence in nearly every State and Territory in Australia.

Gary Stewart, chief executive QinetiQ Australia Sector and Chief Defence Scientist Prof Tanya Monro, AC, celebrate at the opening of QinetiQ’s state-of-the-art South Australian research facility at Mawson Lakes. The first-of-its-kind research facility will support several key programs including the Directed Energy Program, in partnership with #DSTG, to support the establishment and commercialisation of a high energy laser capability in Australia, drawing on the company’s expertise from QinetiQ’s parent company, a member of the DragonFire consortium on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defence.

Australia was proud to host the Five Eyes Science and Technology Principals’ Annual Meeting in Adelaide from 23-26 September. This partnership remains a vital element of our security settings, through which we significantly enhance our situational awareness and leverage our diversity for strategic advantage.
