A huge congratulations to our 2024 graduate and school leaver cohort! 🎉 🎓 Over the past 12 months, our 74 graduates have rotated through 3 placements across the department, expanding their skills through targeted learning and development. Our grads also delivered a major project to our executive board. For the first time, we placed 23 graduates in state capitals across Australia. We’ll continue to support grads working flexibly around the country. This year 100% of our grads and school leavers completed the program and secured ongoing jobs in our department. Day 2 of Science and Technology Australia’s Science Meets Parliament continued our national conversation on science and policy making. Our department’s Secretary Meghan Quinn joined policy makers for a panel on how government departments use STEM research to tackle Australia’s biggest challenges. Another session looked at ways to put Indigenous Communities at the centre of Australian research. Australian astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg was joined by Nobel Laureate Brian Schmidt to discuss the limitless possibilities of Australian science! #SMP2025

Australia joined over 90 other countries at the AI Action Summit in Paris, France on 10 and 11 February 2025. Australia signed the Statement on Inclusive and Sustainable AI for People and the Planet, affirming a multi-stakeholder and inclusive approach to AI governance. As a leader in AI safety, Australia also: - co-chaired regional discussions on responsible AI - joined global initiatives on AI trust, safety and gender-based online harms - joined a network of AI observatories focused on the future of work - met with our counterparts in the International Network of AI Safety Institutes. The Australian Government is supporting critical minerals production and processing through a new incentive. The Critical Minerals Production Tax Incentive (CMPTI) is part of the Future Made in Australia bill that passed Parliament on 11 February 2025. It will support Australia’s efforts to produce and process more of the minerals needed for global net zero transformation. Science Meets Parliament is Science & Technology Australia’s national gathering of policy makers and the STEM community! Day 1 delivered a packed agenda of training, policy discussions and networking. From demystifying democracy to mastering the art of science communication, delegates gained valuable insights into shaping national conversations. Anthony Murfett, head of our Technology and Digital Division, welcomed audiences on behalf of our department. The Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic MP addressed the Press Club. Australia’s STEM leaders, parliamentarians and delegates met for a gala dinner at the National Museum of Australia, where Australia's Chief Scientist Tony Haymet PhD and Minister Husic gave an address. Small and medium businesses working in agtech, renewable energy and battery technology are receiving grant funding through the Industry Growth Program. The program targets the Australian Government’s priority areas in the National Reconstruction Fund, and help builds manufacturing capability. The latest round of projects funded include: - Allegro Energy’s redox flow battery energy storage systems for long-duration energy storage - CoilRig’s affordable and environmentally friendly Coiled Tube drilling system - Azaneo building Pulsed Electric Field weed control technology prototype - Magic Valley’s transition from cultivated meat research to commercial production. AI Adopt centre SAAM have published a report on how small to medium business perceive and experience AI. SAAM aims to make safe AI easy for businesses, and this report will help them build a set of simple online tools and practical resources to enable Australian SMEs to safely adopt AI.
