  • Not everyone knows what career they want to pursue. On top of the pressure of having to choose what to do after high school, family expectations can add to the overwhelm. Miley Nguyen knows this feeling well and recently shared her experience with PerthNow. After studying civil engineering at university and starting her career, Miley was craving a major shift in her life. Studying at TAFE allowed Miley to move into a career in mental health where she offers 1:1 support to others, a change that has truly brought her happiness. "Training was really the key to unlocking my passion for a career that resonates with my true self. Especially with half the cost waivered, making it affordable to complete.”

  • As we continue to look back on 2024, the Women in Non-Traditional Trades Scholarship Program continues to stand out for breaking barriers and empowering women to thrive in male-dominated industries. 🔨✨👷♀️ One inspiring example is Daisy Hillam, a carpentry apprentice at North Metropolitan TAFE. Reflecting on her journey, Daisy shared with us, “I knew I liked a bit of DIY and I thought maybe carpentry could be for me.” With initial nerves about entering a male-dominated field, she decided to take the leap into carpentry. “I was nervous to start and join a very male-dominated industry, but it’s been more fulfilling and exciting than I could have imagined.” Since starting her apprenticeship, Daisy has seen major shifts in the industry as well as in her own workplace. “I was the first female apprentice my company hired, now we have six other women working on our team and almost outnumber the men.” Her advice to women considering non-traditional trades? “Go for it!” The Department’s commitment to supporting under-represented groups is creating opportunities for women to access training and employment, break barriers in male-dominated industries, and help build a diverse workforce in WA. 🤝✨ 🎬 Watch the video below to see Daisy’s story in action. #DTWD #YearInReview #2024InReview #WAJobs #WorkforceDevelopment #WomenInNonTraditionalTrades #WINTT #BreakingBarriers #BuildingAndConstruction

  • The investment that keeps on giving! WA’s $25 million TAFE Modern Equipment Program is transforming training facilities and delivering world-class learning tools and training facilities across the State.✨🎁   💡Fun fact: Did you know that, combined with free and low-fee training initiatives and the $250 million investment, this is the largest TAFE capital works program in WA's history? This investment is delivering industry-relevant training and practical experiences to ensure students are job ready.🎓🔧   We recently visited South Metropolitan TAFE’s Munster Campus to see this in action. Their new 3D metal printer is giving applied engineering students hands-on experience designing and manufacturing components for industries like mining, manufacturing, and defence.   Partnering with TAFE is just one of the many ways the Department is committed to supporting contemporary learning experiences that equip students with the skills they need to thrive in their careers.🚀    #DTWD #VocationalEducationAndTraining #TAFE #Apprenticeships #JobReady
