DHASWA is actively involved in some exciting national research this year, and is excited to have the support of A/Prof Helen Wilcox and Dr Rikki Priest working on national priorities in doctors health.   We were lucky to have a presentation on Wellbeing and Diversity from A/Prof Jill Benson AM and Dr Shaun Prentice discussing the importance of exploring diversity in general practice to reduce burnout with their ‘dumbbell’ selfcare model of personal and professional wellbeing. These experts, along with our medical director A/Prof Helen Wilcox also provided insight on how to develop a research question and improve understanding of evidence to integrate into practice. Today is International Men’s Day. Many of our doctors who identify as male find it challenging to be seen as vulnerable and feel that they should be able to manage their own health. However there is strength in reaching out for help and preventatively managing your own well-being. Everyone needs support and the confidential, independent and holistic care of a GP. Having an established relationship with a trusted GP is valuable. Even just one preventative visit is a great way to prioritise your health so that you can continue to practice medicine and be there for your loved ones in the future. Many universities are integrating mindfulness based programs into their curriculums to support health, wellbeing and increase resilience of students. The study 'The Western Australian medical schools mindfulness project: a randomised controlled trial' by Moore et al observed the positive effects of mindfulness on 114 medical students over a 8 week period. They found significant improvements in mindfulness, self compassion and study engagement in the intervention group. It's important to note that these improvement were not sustained at the 6 month follow up, indicating the need for ongoing mindfulness practices to continue to experience positive outcomes. Mindfulness can be an effective technique to improve wellbeing and especially with ongoing practice, the many benefits are seen over time. Although the evidence for mindfulness based practices is increasing, it can be difficult to integrate into our busy days at work. However, there are small practices that are proving to be effective.
