🌱 Seed Storage Humidity Solutions 🌱 Seeds are stored for various application including commercial, research and government regrowth. A prominent Australian government forestry body store seeds for forest fire risk reduction and face challenges with high humidity in 4°C seed storage environments, which can lead to early germination and mold growth. DST, bringing years of expertise in seed storage, swiftly installed an RL060LR dehumidifier, achieving ideal conditions in just two days. Humidity was brought down to 40% RH (-8°C dewpoint), providing optimal protection for stored seeds. A useful guideline in seed storage is keeping Fahrenheit + RH < 100. For detailed recommendations, ASHRAE offers a comprehensive summary of ideal seed storage conditions. #SeedStorage #AgricultureSolutions #HumidityControl #Dehumidification #DSTDryer #SustainableAgricultur

Did you know keeping RH below 40%RH prevents corrosion The average RH in most Australian capitals is over 80% with Sydney 83%rh and even Canberra 70%RH Corrosion typically requires four components to implement the corrosive circuit. These are the anode (the positively charged material), the cathode (the corrosive component), the electrolyte (typically water or water vapour) and air for completion of the circuit. The elimination of any of these contributions will halt the development of corrosion Corrosion rates have been shown to accelerate exponentially when the relative humidity (RH) is over 50% and most coating compliance is 80%RH on metal surfaces. The effect of thermal inertia usually requires the surrounding air to be 20-30%RH less than the required surface humidity to allow for this (a 4-6°C temperature difference from surface to air). research that relates humidity to corrosion first identified by Vernon in 1930 where various metals were tested all generally all had accelerated corrosion rates over 40%RH. Methods of humidity control -Desiccant dehumidifiers with benefits include; avoiding corrosion year round independent of temperature in enclosed spaces. - full surface heating which carries very high energy costs in heating all associated surfaces. - Refrigeration which is effective in climates which are humid all year round,. - removal of air with nitrogen which provides some access limitations. Learn more on corrosion prevention of your items by contacting us , and maybe some of our papers presented to corrosion museum and defence forum’s may support your solution

Humidity control in University Libraries with DST Dehumidifiers In humid climates, maintaining optimal indoor air quality (IAQ) is crucial, especially for preventing mold in sensitive environments like libraries. One effective strategy is utilizing DOAS (Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems) with desiccant dehumidifiers, which helps reduce energy consumption by controlling humidity without excessive cooling. A Queensland University's library recently upgraded its air supply system with a desiccant DOAS, ensuring space conditions remain below 50% RH, in line with the National Library of Australia guidelines. These units, powered by refrigeration heat, can also be easily upgraded to solar, offering both efficiency and sustainability. Similarly, a University in NSW Library tackled its humidity challenges by installing three CFA122 chilled water desiccant units. These systems, with a capacity of 6000 l/s and onboard compressors for regeneration heat, effectively maintain the required 50% RH, ensuring the preservation of valuable materials. By implementing DST's advanced desiccant technology, these universities are setting new standards for energy-efficient humidity control in libraries. #HumidityControl #LibraryPreservation #IAQ #Sustainability #EngineeringSolutions

🌍 Drying Biltong with DST Air Dryer Visit market stalls at Chatswood, Sydney, and you will find “Biltong to go,” where locals enjoy the famous South African delicacy. Unknown to customers is the careful marination process and the use of DST Dryer desiccant dehumidifiers to ensure consistent drying at low temperatures, ensuring quality is maintained. 🔧 To optimize product drying such as biltong, we can reduce trial and error time by suggesting a drying approach that tackles key parameters in drying food: temperature, humidity, airflow, and handling methods are key considerations. Sample design– 20ft Container Size Dry Room Design • Air Flow: 2-4m/s recommended. Velocity through the product should be between 2m/s and 4m/s for turbulence on product skin for faster drying. • Heat Load: From DST R061R Dehumidifier to room 7kW – (0- 5.6kW average cooing from 8.3kg/h product evaporation. Max est 7kW) • Cooling Load: 7kW desiccant heat generation from drying 8.3kg/h (plus summer heat gain 2kW) Process Method: Product Drying with Desiccant Dehumidifier – Batch Drying Using desiccant dehumidifiers for product drying as a bypass to recirculated air. The heat given off by the desiccant is adequate for heating the room, and therefore cooling equipment is needed to avoid overcooling. As each product has its unique drying characteristics, it's essential to know a drying profile for initial selection. Initial evaporation rates are usually substantially higher than the calculated average. To identify average drying rate, simply measure the change in weight over time then allow for initial load with oversizing.

🏠 Desiccant Dehumidification for Winter Housing ❄️ As housing air leakage differs considerably, accurate selection using conventional load analysis is challenging. Factors like leakage, Number of people, gas combustion, showers, and door openings play significant roles. Additionally, winter design performance is a crucial design check, as dewpoint on glass and other cold surfaces can easily lead to condensation. Unlike traditional refrigeration options, Desiccant dehumidifiers don't rely on condensation to function, making them highly effective in cold season humidity control. Australia's National Construction Code (NCC2022) provisions aim to decrease condensation risk in new homes. To achieve optimal performance, AIRAH DA07 design guide for critical moisture analysis should be applied to budget selection of equipment. This guide specifies performance-based design criteria for predicting, mitigating, or reducing moisture damage to the building envelope, materials, components, systems, and furnishings, depending on climate, construction type, and HVAC system operation. Typical DA07 selections based on constraints: 2 bedroom sealed house: DA07 says 9L/day = 0.375L/h 3 bedroom sealed house: DA07 says 10L/day = 0.416L/h 4 bedroom sealed house: DA07 says 11L/day = 0.458L/h 1 or 2 Bedroom Selection - DST models: DC5 Summer 20C50%RH 0.45L/h DC5 Winter 10C50%RH 0.32L/h 3 or 4 Bedroom Selection – DST Models: DC10 in summer 20C50%RH 0.56L/h DC10 in winter 10C50%RH 0.41L/h DC10 in winter 0C 50%RH 0.27kg/h Refrigeration option - Summer only option: in summer 20C50%RH 0.50L/h in winter 10C50%RH 0Cdp Refrigeration is non-operational DST model DC5 or DC10 is suitable if leakage is contained to levels estimated in DA07. Desiccant units can be ducted to multiple rooms if open to a common return location, providing a solution for building code moisture. FYI, underfloor “crawlspace” units used extensively in Europe may also be a solution. Designers need to know if there is ventilation, seepage, and volume. Installing a dehumidifier is straightforward instruction. Each crawlspace is unique, and the installation will vary. The diagram above schematically illustrates a typical installation. Minimize energy consumption by using a hygrostat (humidity sensor) to control the dehumidifier. The hygrostat activates the dehumidifier when humidity is too high and turns it off when it’s sufficiently low. A control box with a high-humidity warning light can be connected to the hygrostat and installed prominently inside the house. Let's ensure homes stay dry and comfortable this winter! 🌬️🏡 Feel free to share your experiences and thoughts in the comments below! 👇 #WinterHousing #Dehumidification #DesiccantDehumidifiers #HomeComfort #DSTDryer
