It might seem like nothing but this is more than an ad. This example of one habit (there’s many more), one very simple habit one symbol of everything we stand for—a bold but basic, relatable message in the heart of a suburban shopping centre, right where decisions about food are made. It represents years of relentless work by a not for profit charity: diving deep into the habits that lead to millions of tonnes of household food waste, unlocking insights through behavioural science, testing and retesting creative to understand how Australians think, feel, and act, where and how the waste happens. This is the culmination of research, creativity, and purpose, brought to life with one mission: to inspire and assist a nation to act. Looking at this one simple outdoor ad, lighting up a space in suburbia gave me a rare moment to pause, to stand back, and realise the magnitude of what we are building—a campaign grounded in evidence, credibility, and a fierce determination to make a difference. We’re not just raising awareness; we’re igniting change. For all Australians. For the planet. For the future. This is what fighting the good credible fight for Australian households looks like, and I couldn’t be prouder. The Great Unwaste. We’re thrilled to have been featured in the Ordermentum article in collaboration with EFWA (End Food Waste Australia) to highlight the issue of food waste and its impact on our planet. Food waste is a big problem, and hospitality venues are a big part of it—Australian venues alone throw away over 1.2 million tonnes of food every year, much of which is still perfectly edible. That’s 16% of the country’s total food waste! It’s not just an environmental issue—food waste is also a big contributor to climate change. Wasting food means wasting all the resources like water, energy, and land used to produce it. And when food ends up in landfill, it produces methane, which is worse for the planet than carbon dioxide. At Radish Events, we're turning this challenge into an opportunity to make a real impact and do our bit for the planet. 🌱 We weigh our food waste on a weekly basis. It’s simple, but it keeps us on track and helps our chefs feel good about cutting down on waste. 🌱We do our best to help our clients find the best menu format and quantities for their event, avoiding over-catering and focusing on excellent guest experience. 🌱We design our menus using offcuts and by products of whole ingredients, turning them into tasty dishes that our guests love. Even small actions can make a big difference. By choosing a caterer who values sustainability and is committed to reducing food waste, you’re taking a step towards a more responsible and eco-friendly event. If you’re looking to make a real impact at your next event, opt for a catering partner who prioritises reducing waste and creating delicious menus with a minimal environmental footprint. Want to learn more about how you can reduce food waste at your venue or event? Imagine a future where minimising food waste is as routine as pouring a flat white, or serving a sandwich... Each year a typical cafe generates a volume of food waste equivalent to 70,000 cups of coffee per employee, and with rising ingredient costs and shrinking margins, it's time for cafés to rethink their approach. For the planet and for profits. End Food Waste Australia has released a Cafe Sector Action Plan, providing cafes with industry-informed tips to tackle food waste including - 🍝 Reducing or offering choice of portion size for commonly wasted items 🍳 Learning from front-of-house staff about what is being wasted and using this knowledge to reshape a menu 🥪 Normalising ‘doggy bags’ - asking customers if they would like their leftovers boxed up. This plan aims to help cafés boost their sustainability and profits, even in tough times. Download the Cafe Sector Action Plan: https://hubs.li/Q02Y0L0R0 RMIT University Sarah Hughes
