Reflecting on the year as it draws to a close, Energy Consumers Australia CEO, Brendan French, notes that much of the current focus of the energy discussion is concerned with supply, despite the average consumer being "far more likely to rally around a discussion about how energy can best be used, and how costs can best be avoided." Catch the latest update #FromTheCEO (and our last for 2024 - see you in 2025! 👋)

"Consumers are feeling there's benefit in the renewables transition...but 20% of people feel that governments have explained to them what's going on and how they can participate. People are understanding the macro, but not the micro." 🗣️ Catch our CEO, Brendan French, in conversation with Luke Menzel from the Energy Efficiency Council, in the latest episode of 'First Fuel'. 🎧 Listen to the podcast on Spotify: https://loom.ly/br2XfEQ or Apple podcasts: https://loom.ly/FRhxfm0

Our submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) on its review of electricity pricing for a consumer-driven future supports its approach and consumer focus. Our primary recommendation is that the review focus on fairness, equity, and justice. 📑 Read our submission and response to questions posed by the consultation paper: https://loom.ly/0LnE6GM

Extreme weather events, like heatwaves, severe storms and bushfires, can disrupt access to power, food, water and even money. By getting energy ready, communities can be better prepared if this happens - and equipped to take action 💪 The Energy Ready Toolkit has been created with help from communities across Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, to share lessons and practical tips to build energy resilience. It was developed in partnership with the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, Community Power Agency and Parallel Lines, and funded through Energy Consumers Australia's grants program. 👉 Find out more and download the toolkit: https://loom.ly/mwBv9Ps

Australians consistently tell us they want an affordable energy system, so we’re very pleased to see the Victorian Government’s proposed approach to the future of the gas network for households and small businesses focuses on the cost-benefits for consumers. The Victorian Government’s proposal would mean all new homes and many small business premises become all-electric. This will save consumers real money today and also prevent them from purchasing a property that it will cost them to remediate in future. The proposed policy also sensibly requires gas hot water and heating appliances to be replaced with electric ones when they break down, meaning households and small businesses don’t have to rush out and make expensive purchases now. Our latest consumer survey shows that only 1 in 5 households feel they are getting good communications from governments about what the transition to renewable energy will mean for them. The proposed policy will provide Victorian consumers with clarity that the future is electric, and help them plan their appliance purchases confidently. We look forward to working with the Victorian Government to provide further sustainable supports for households and small businesses who face barriers to getting off the gas network so that all consumers can benefit from this policy change.
