Now this is something we can get behind!
Justice systems are pivotal in development, as they tackle barriers to access to justice, a key aspect of poverty. They ensure fair societies, uphold fundamental rights, and promote accountability. By addressing breaches of law and facilitating peaceful resolution of disputes, they enable effective delivery of essential services such as education, health, and other social services.
Entrust is encouraged to hear Prime Minister Albanese's announcement of a new $20 million investment to support the Philippines to reform, and improve access to, its justice system. With 7 million people living in abject poverty, surviving on less than US$0.50 per person per day, this is welcome news. Our local partners in the Philippines are committed to helping the ultra-poor through education, promotion of healthy living and empowerment through income generation and savings.
The multitude of obstacles faced by impoverished individuals in accessing justice perpetuates a cycle of poverty, exclusion, and injustice. Empowering them to assert their rights through a stronger justice system is crucial in combating poverty and addressing widening global and national inequalities.
