A ground-breaking study has revealed that a little-studied RNA might hold the key to regulating genetic disorders like epilepsy and autism. Researchers discovered that a missing RNA, CHASERR, contributes to overproduction of a protein from the CHD2 gene, leading to severe neurodevelopmental disorders. This discovery sheds light on the vast, unexplored 99% of the human genome and opens new doors for potential treatments by manipulating long non-coding RNAs. The study underscores the importance of delving deeper into this largely ignored part of our DNA. A new study reveals that sleep apnoea and low oxygen levels during sleep are linked to epilepsy that develops after age 60. Researchers found that older adults experiencing nocturnal low blood oxygen levels were three times more likely to develop epilepsy. These findings shed light on the connection between sleep disorders and brain health, highlighting sleep apnoea as a potential target for reducing epilepsy risk in older adults. 🩺 Prioritising better sleep might mean better brain health and fewer health complications later in life.
