My tenure at a prominent steel manufacturing and reinforcing solutions provider in the region allowed me to hone my skills over 4.5 years (2013-2017). On detailing odd shapes and large sizes reinforced concrete elements (e.g. substructure - odd shape but symmetrical in-situ footing as shown) it is very crucial to consider the following factors: (1) Compliance with the design - Due to a high volume of steel reinforcement, a congestion is quite common, also the minimum clear spacing in between bars must be maintained enable to cover it with concrete to develop properly. Apart from a very large bending envelop size where splitting it into few pieces is necessary enable to manufacture it and deliver safely. Please be noted that any change on design or introduction of alternate design must be checked, verified, and approved by the permanent works engineer. Proposing an alternate to the design is never an issue provided that the solution being proposed is of equivalent or better than the current design. Keeping in mind every detail on the drawings has a "design intent" which is in most cases extremely critical to change without the approval of the design engineer. (2) Manufacturing/ Bending Limitations - During the detailing/ 3D modelling process, always keep in mind the manufacturing limitations, tolerances and bending procedures. This has a significant part on solutions being provided whilst in compliance with the design. (3) Installation Sequence and Productivity - Install of each bar is very crucial part and must be considered during detailing/ 3D modelling process. The size length of bar is very critical on its placement, productivity and safe handling. As part of the reinforcement solution, a comprehensive install sequence/ marking plans or methodology must be supplied. (4) Delivery Limitations - This is often over-looked. Overly critical on prefabricated elements though on in-situ/ loose bars are commonly manageable. Most of the times, delivery limitations also have a significant impact on how the design will be finalised for modularised solutions. (5) Economy/ Reasonable Costs on Proposed Solution - This often neglected. Always keep in mind that providing a reinforcement solution is also looking into other options that is reasonable and cost-effective. It must be the last option to neglect the pricing if no other viable solution. These are only few important things to keep in mind. We know how to start it properly and finish it successfully.
