As we close out the year, we'd like to reflect on some amazing achievements from our team. Managing Lawyer of our Family Law and Family Violence team, Madeleine Lynch, received an award last month at the Law Council of Australia's 2024 awards for an essay responding to the prompt 'if I were Attorney-General for a day, how would I fix the Family Law System?' Fantastic work Madeleine!
Huge congratulations to the recipients of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia's awards for 2024. The awards were presented by Mr Ian Kennedy, AM at the 20th National Family Law Conference currently underway in Perth. Ms Jessica Walton was awarded The Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Award for her paper titled, 'The Legal Ownership of Life: Navigating the Legal Complexities of Reproductive Material in Australian Family Law.' Ms Madeleine Lynch of Fitzroy Legal Service was awarded The Pro Bono and Not for Profit Essay Award for her paper in answer of the prompt, 'If I were Attorney-General for a day, how would I fix the Family Law System?' Again, the Family Law Section extends their congratulations to Ms Walton and Ms Lynch, and looks forward to their continued contributions to the family law space.

Staff, volunteers and supporters of the community legal sector are invited to the 34th Annual Tim McCoy Memorial Dinner. In memory of Tim McCoy, this annual event brings the sector together to celebrate the hard work and achievements of those protecting human rights and advocating for justice for all Victorians. Tim was a national community legal centre representative, community worker, solicitor, political activist, teacher of law, larrikin, and founding members of Victoria’s community legal movement, who passed away tragically and suddenly in 1987. His legacy and impact continue to be felt in the Victorian community legal sector to this day. Join us on 8 November at Richmond Town Hall to celebrate our sector, and hear from keynote speaker, Hugh de Kretser, who is the new President of the Human Rights Commission following a decades-long career in Community Legal Centres. Wonderful to have Q+Law participate in the vibrant LGBTIQA+ Multicultural Fair Day in the City of Merri-Bek. Returning for its second year due to popular demand, the fair is a testament to the local community's commitment to celebrating culture and inclusivity. Special thanks to Fair Manager and Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, Maria Bololia, for her vision and dedication in driving this event forward. We also acknowledge the remarkable community organisations that helped make this another memorable and empowering experience for all.

Congratulations to South-East Monash Legal Service on the launch of Justice Q, a new specialist legal service run for and by LGBTIQA+ communities! It was wonderful to connect with the team and celebrate with other specialist service providers and advocates working tirelessly for the realisation of LGBTIQA+ rights across Victoria. We look forward to seeing the impact that Justice Q will have on the lives of LBGTIQA+ individuals in the south-east region. A service we know is needed all too well, given the unique legal needs and ongoing inequalities that LGBTIQA+ communities continue to face.
