#SanFrancisco ’s sidewalks are now mapped in greater detail than ever before! We’ve published nearly 3,300 images of the city’s Financial District, Union Square, and #Chinatown, capturing the everyday elements that shape urban life: 🌳 1,239 trees cooling streets, ♿ 629 curb cuts enabling wheelchair access, 🚲 215 bike racks supporting active transport, and much more. 📍 https://lnkd.in/geByehie This isn’t just about mapping for the sake of mapping—it’s about rethinking how we see cities. Trees don’t just beautify streets; they combat urban heat and make walking more inviting. Accessible crossings and well-placed benches mean more people can move freely and comfortably. With this data, we’re helping communities and planners design streets that are inclusive, climate-conscious, and built for the people who use them every day. If you want your city sidewalks mapped too, get in touch. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dY_izkvQ City and County of San Francisco San Francisco County Transportation Authority San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) #OpenStreetMap #AI #Mapping #Walking #Walkability #Mobility

Mapping the world's sidewalks with AI and street-level images
About us
Imagine maps focused on pedestrians, not just cars. That's what footpath.ai is building, using AI, computer vision and street-level imagery to create detailed maps that include sidewalks, crosswalks, trees, benches, bike racks, and more - a stark contrast to traditional car-centric maps. With over 100,000 sidewalk view images and a growing global walking community of mappers around the globe, we are on track to map the world's sidewalks. footpath.ai is a spinout of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and consists of a team of AI/computer vision scientists, geospatial engineers, programmers, and developers, based in Sydney, Australia. Our walking person's view street-level imagery can also be used for automatic detection and mapping of POIs, footpath condition assessment and audits, buildings' façade risk assessment, and many more applications that require up-to-date and high-resolution imagery. footpath.ai is backed by the UNSW Founders, Nvidia Inception, and AWS Activate programs.

footpath.ai is on the ground in new cities. 🌍 From #Sydney 🇦🇺, we’ve made our way to #SanFrancisco 🇺🇸, #London 🇬🇧, and #Barcelona 🇪🇸. Through a collaboration with Urbanitarian, we’ve captured the essence of Barcelona’s vibrant superblocks, adding a European heartbeat to our platform. 🇪🇺 Feel the hum of Barcelona’s superblocks. Stand in the shadows of Trafalgar Square. Let the wind catch you at San Francisco’s Embarcadero. We’ve only mapped a few kilometers in each of these cities so far, but every journey begins with the first steps. 📍Barcelona: https://lnkd.in/gpe2VTc8 📍London: https://lnkd.in/g_MxbhPu 📍San Francisco: https://lnkd.in/geByehie 📍Sydney: https://lnkd.in/gE-EqdKe There’s so much more to explore. Great news for those passionate about #walkability, #accessibility, and #sustainable urban living in South Australia! 🌳🚶♀️🚲 We have released nearly 10,000 high-resolution street-level images capturing the entire #Adelaide CBD (Kaurna Country) pedestrian network. The data provides comprehensive coverage and features hundreds of mapped benches, bike racks 🚲, bins 🚮, lowered curb ramps👩🦽➡️, and pedestrian crossings 🚸, as well as thousands of mapped trees 🌳, enhancing urban canopy insights. 📍 https://lnkd.in/gsD3hP8y The micro-mapped urban features support better decision-making for pedestrians, urban planners, and sustainable transport advocates. By making this data available, we aim to empower cities to enhance their public spaces and infrastructure, prioritizing both human and environmental needs. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to map cities for smarter, greener futures—one image at a time. 🌍 City of Adelaide Department for Infrastructure and Transport Walking SA

Walking into a rivalry... literally! 🚶♀️We mapped the UNSW campus a while ago (modern, efficient, perfect, right?) and now, the data and imagery from the University of Sydney are live on footpath.ai! Of course, UNSW leads in many areas, but I have to admit—some of Uni Sydney’s historic buildings are truly astonishing. Rivalry aside, both campuses offer incredible spaces to explore on foot. #GISDay is the perfect time to reflect and share what we’ve been up to with footpath.ai! At #GeoForum2024, I had the chance to talk about how we’re using #GeoAI to make cities more walkable and sidewalks more accessible for everyone—whether you’re walking, rolling, or delivering. I shared the story of how footpath.ai started as a UNSW spinout back in 2021 and has grown into a platform with 100,000+ sidewalk view images from 12 cities around the world including all 5 major capital cities in Australia. What’s really exciting is seeing a growing community of mappers in Oceania, Asia, Europe, and North America coming together to rethink what it means to walk through a city and turning their walks into a global impact. 👇 If interested, you can sign up and join our global community of mappers: https://lnkd.in/g-jX3FvM Big thanks to Dr Ori Gudes and D'Arcy Roche at TfNSW for putting this event together and inviting me to share our work. GeoForum always has such a good vibe—meeting people who love geospatial stuff as much as we do is the best part. For those who don’t know, GeoForum is Transport for NSW annual geospatial meetup, and this year’s focus was on "asset management"—something we think about a lot when it comes to sidewalks and active transport.
