Swift parrot monitoring continues in Tasmania’s public production forests As the season progresses, flocks of swift parrots are being observed in Tasmania’s public production forests and surrounding areas. Sustainable Timber Tasmania’s Swift Parrot Monitoring Program continues to actively seek to track these migratory birds across key areas including the Tasman Peninsula, southern forests, and Eastern Tiers. Recent on-site surveys and acoustic monitoring have shown promising swift parrot activity, which will hopefully lead to successful breeding events. Over the past two weeks, our team spotted sizeable flocks in areas of the Eastern Tiers. This year swift parrots are attracted by the heavily flowering Eucalyptus ovata and Eucalyptus brookeriana in these areas, where they forage, feed, perform mating rituals and identify breeding hollows within which to raise their chicks. While no swift parrots were reported in the southern forests or the Tasman Peninsula during this monitoring period, our work continues throughout the summer. Our team will be conducting further surveys and collecting data to guide adaptive forest management, minimising potential disturbance to both the parrots and its habitat. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor activity throughout the season!

🌳🔥 Using AI to protect Tasmania’s forests and communities from bushfires 🔥🌳 Sustainable Timber Tasmania is leading the way in fire prevention with the expansion of our cutting-edge fire detection network. In partnership with Indicium Dynamics, we’ve now deployed 9 smoke detection cameras across the state, utilising advanced AI technology to detect fires earlier and respond with a rapid and weighted attack. The technology uses artificial intelligence and sophisticated computer vision to spot fire signatures in even the most challenging terrains. Operating 24/7, the network provides real-time fire detection and rapid alerts to help contain fires before they escalate – protecting both Permanent Timber Production Zone land and surrounding communities and critical infrastructure. Since November 2024, our network has detected 317 fires, with 62 escalations. We’re committed to enhancing the state’s ability to detect and respond to bushfires quickly, safeguarding forests and communities for all. 📍 New addition: A camera has recently been installed at Bradys Fire Tower, further strengthening the largest and fastest-growing network of fire detection cameras in Tasmania. 📷 In action: Tylers Hill Fire Tower, Southport | Snow Hill Fire Tower detecting a fire | Bradys Fire Tower, Central Highlands.

🌱 Sustainable Timber Tasmania is excited to share a major environmental initiative on Bruny Island! Over the past year, we’ve been hard at work establishing a 55-hectare forest dedicated to supporting the island’s rich birdlife, on land previously used for grazing. By 2026, we’re set to plant over 30,000 black gum and blue gum seedlings, creating vital habitats for threatened species like the swift parrot and other Tasmanian endemic birds. Early monitoring of these seedlings has shown promising results, with surveys confirming healthy growth and the site meeting its ecological stocking target of 400–500 stems per hectare. The blue gum and black gum plantings across the fenced paddocks are thriving, with early growth suggesting they are well established. The project is registered under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) scheme and will serve as a research platform to assess how seed zones respond to changing environmental conditions. We’re excited to share more updates on this important initiative as we continue working to create immediate conservation results and long-term ecological resilience on Bruny Island.

🌳🔥 Sustainable Timber Tasmania, Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service are ready to fight fire from the skies this bushfire season! 🚁🌳 Through the National Aerial Firefighting Centre (NAFC), Tasmania has access to 15 aircraft - 9 are already deployed in the south, with 6 more arriving before Christmas. This bushfire season, Sustainable Timber Tasmania is combining early bushfire detection with rapid response firefighting. Our AI powered smoke detection cameras across the state are helping us to spot fires earlier and act faster. This approach means we can respond quickly and effectively to keep fires contained, while providing essential intelligence to support ground crews in their efforts. ⛵ Sustainable Timber Tasmania jumps on board community effort to save Hobart’s “Little Blue Boat.” The beloved and iconic Sea Breeze, that has captured the heart of many Tasmanians, was ripped from her moorings in Montrose Bay earlier this year during powerful storms in the south. After the storm damage, concerns from the community led the Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin to step in and purchase Sea Breeze for $1, with the condition that the boat was restored. Recognising the importance of this project, Sustainable Timber Tasmania reached out to @woodenboatcentre to offer support. A dedicated team of volunteers, under the expert guidance of head shipwright Cody Horgan, has now embarked on the meticulous restoration process to secure the boat’s future. Working closely with Cody and his team, we sourced local Celery top pine to help in the restoration of the boat’s deck and hull, as well as salvaged Oregon pine for the mast, which was broken in two from the storm damage. We look forward to keeping you updated on the restoration!

🔎 Sustainable Timber Tasmania is stepping up efforts to monitor swift parrots Sustainable Timber Tasmania’s Swift Parrot Monitoring Program is in full swing, with recent surveys conducted across key areas of Tasmania, including the Tasman Peninsula, Southern Forests, and Eastern Tiers. Our research and operations teams are pleased to report encouraging signs of swift parrot activity, with small groups of parrots observed foraging on blue gum and black gum at various sites, both within forest reserves and surrounding production areas. While no nesting activity has been identified so far, these early observations signal a positive start to the season and return of the parrots to Tasmania. By closely monitoring swift parrots, Sustainable Timber Tasmania is adapting forest management activities as needed to support a successful swift parrot breeding season. We look forward to keeping you updated on our monitoring efforts as the season progresses.

Our Spring Burning Program has concluded! 🔥Sustainable Timber Tasmania’s fire management team completed nine fuel reduction burns on just over 1,400 hectares and multiple tenures across the state this season. 🔎 Burns were conducted on the West Coast (Strahan and Zeehan areas), North East (St Helens and Mathinna areas), South (Glendevie area), South East (Nugent area), and Central Highlands (Derwent Bridge). 👩🚒 We also provided more than 150 firefighters to assist the Tasmania Fire Service with 12 of their fuel reduction burns across other land tenures. Fuel reduction burns help protect people, property, forests and plantations by reducing fuel loads in Tasmania’s public production forest, mitigating bushfire risk and maintaining the health of fire-dependent vegetation communities. #fuelreductionprogram #plannedburning #fires #sttfireupdates #community #tasmania
