Today is Buy Nothing day and next Tuesday is Giving Tuesday both are designed to counter Black Friday, a day where mass consumption is being encouraged. Could you go without shopping for a day and just meet your basic needs? Let's all do it together, and if you plan to donate next Tuesday please consider the huge impact we can have together in saving koalas from extinction, many small donations add up to a big donation. As always thank you so much for your support. #GivingTuesday #buynothing #savekoalas https://lnkd.in/gpEUZSBd

For their Future
About us
At Friends of the Koala, we believe in a future for koalas in the NSW Northern Rivers. Operating for over 35 years, we have an established history of working towards positive outcomes for koalas. We are licensed through NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick and injured koalas. We operate the only specialised Koala Hospital in the region which is licensed through the veterinary board of NSW. Each year on average, we tend to 350 sick, injured, and orphaned koalas, which is approximately 50% of all wild koalas rescued in NSW. ‘Burribi’ (Widjabul word for Koala) is our Community Education and Administration Centre in East Lismore. It is our operational hub for community engagement and advocacy activity, connecting us with a multitude of stakeholder groups across the Northern Rivers. We work with all levels of government to advocate for koalas and drive positive outcomes across the region. We also negotiate with landowners to preserve and extend known koala habitat through targeted Habitat Restoration Projects. Through our Community Nursery, we issue koala food trees and other rainforest species to private landholders and tree planting groups at a sub-commercial rate, facilitating the maximum return in terms of number of trees in the ground for their available budget. Over the past three decades, we have issued over 200,000 koala food trees which are now planted across the Northern Rivers (total plants issued is closer to 500,000 however we only collect data on food trees, not rainforest species). The recent expansion of our nursery facility will allow us to issue a further 200,000 plus koala food trees within the next three years.

Nine year old Wookie (cool name ) was admitted in mid October with Chlamydial conjunctivitis, cystitis and kidney disease, he must be feeling very unwell and we have delayed his antibiotic treatment until he is more stable. He is very cute! Tull is also nine years old and was admitted in a compromised condition with an ear infection and is also anaemic. You can see there's not much fur on his ears. Livio who is a returning patient was admitted in mid October with severe Chlamydial cystitis, he has started treatment and is hopefully responding well. We will know more about these three handsome boys in the coming days and weeks. Please send all your love their way so they can heal, it is often touch and go but we will do all we can. #koala #Chlamydia #koalahospital #NorthernRivers

Shae and Soul are our most recent mum and joey dyad who were admitted recently following a car hit. Shae sustained serious internal injuries and has undergone surgery. She is recovering well but has a long road of rehabilitation ahead of her. Soul luckily didn’t sustain any injuries and thankfully has gained weight. They have both progressed to an outdoor enclosure and Shae has already been climbing and moving around a lot. Poor Shae, these casualties are just crushing for our team – not to mention the ones who didn’t make the collisions.💔 #koala #joey #koalahabitat https://lnkd.in/g2xE2vjs

The great thing about technology and innovation is the ability to use it for good - in this case in the protection of koalas. Knowns as the 'Fauna Escape Hatch' it allows koalas a one-way passage and prevents them from returning across the road. What do you think - is it part of the answer? #koalaprotection

Poor little Bunja sustained serious trauma to his eye, abdominal bleeding and nerve damage to his left arm following a car hit. Bunja spent some time in our ICU and is now in an enclosure inside. Whilst he has started to climb, he still does not have full use of his left arm yet and is still healing. He is on medications including pain relief. This is the very sad reality of the injuries sustained in car hits - if the koalas make it at all. #koalahospital #NorthernRivers #savekoalas https://ow.ly/FGcr50U1MQq

Tulip who was admitted in early September was attacked by a dog, she sustained injuries that resulted in abdominal bleeding and is still resolving. Tulip has been receiving the best treatment and care as well as lots of fresh tips in the hope that things settle and she is back to her old self. ⚠️ It is so important that if you live locally and have dogs, that you know that koalas and dogs don't mix. Your dog, if left out unattended, might just be protecting his home, nevertheless the encounter could be fatal for the koala - on average, over 70% of koalas die after being attacked by dogs in the Northern Rivers. Additionally, a koala who is protecting itself can and will use it's claws and teeth and can cause nasty injuries to dogs. ✔️ Please have a read of our website on how to prevent koala and dog encounters and please give us a call if you suspect and incident has occurred. #koala #koalahospital https://lnkd.in/gyQfe2HN

We all love a bargain - particularly when times are tough and we have no doubt that for those who have big ticket items to purchase this Christmas there is an appeal to Black Friday (Nov 29th). If you would like some ethical gift ideas this season, please consider supporting our work. #blackfriday #savekoalas #sustainablegifts https://ow.ly/ZWu250U1rNm
