About us

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) was established in 2002 to develop a sustainable property industry in Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions. To drive the transition of the Australian property industry towards: -Sustainability - by promoting green building programs, technologies, design practices and operations -Integration - of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings. To achieve these objectives, the GBCA runs the Green Star environmental rating system, education and advocacy efforts in sustainable building practices, and events on the national and international levels.

Green Star goes global!🌎 The Embassy of Australia in Washington DC, has become a symbol of outstanding Australian design, achieving not only a 4 Star Green Star rating, but also the 2024 Jorn Utzon Award for International Architecture. After her visit to the embassy, GBCA CEO Davina Rooney was in awe of the symbolism of this achievement. “The Green Star certification of the embassy is a testament to Australia's leadership in sustainable design and construction, and the location in Washington—an iconic and historically influential city—only amplifies this message. What truly sets this project apart is the seamless integration of cultural and environmental elements. The Indigenous designs woven into the rugs and cushions, the internal wall finishes that evoke the natural form and shade of gum trees and the copper façade that references the changing colouration of the Australian desert, speak to a deep connection with Australia's natural heritage. This blend of design excellence and sustainability, all within a secure and thoughtful environment, is nothing short of extraordinary. We congratulate the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Bates Smart and Aurecon for their visionary approach.” PC: Joe Fletcher

  • This week we welcomed the appointment of two new Directors to our Board. Joining the Board are Mike Zorbas, Chief Executive, Property Council of Australia, and Rob Clarke, Managing Director of Property and Buildings, WSP in Australia. Mike and Rob replace outgoing Board members, Brett Mason and Guy Templeton. Our CEO Davina Rooney, congratulated the new Directors, noting their extensive experience within the built environment, commitment to advocacy and expertise in executive leadership. “It's a unique time in the built environment and I am thrilled with the skills that our new directors bring. Mike has led the property industry's calls for supporting a strong national construction code, which aligns with industry’s shared sustainability commitments while Rob has been an advocate for better buildings since the beginning and plays an important leadership role in the consultancy industry." Davina also praised the exceptional contributions of the outgoing Directors, "GBCA is grateful for the energy and commitment Brett and Guy have shown during their terms. They have left the Board and GBCA in a better position and we are a stronger, more sustainable industry for their efforts, and we thank them for their service." • Today at the EEC’s Building Energy Performance Summit in Melbourne, our friends at NABERS reached a massive milestone with the launch of their Embodied Carbon rating tool.   This new tool enables new buildings and partial rebuilds to measure and compare their upfront embodied carbon with similar buildings, empowering developers, owners, and investors to make data-driven decisions that will help us reach our shared climate goals faster 📉   How? In Australia, embodied carbon from construction activity accounts for 10% of our emissions, most of which happen before or during construction, but Infrastructure Australia research shows we can achieve up to a 23% reduction in these emissions by 2027 with simple decarbonisation strategies.   By measuring emissions, we can create better strategies to decarbonise the future. We commend NABERS for this important piece of work. We are proud to have contributed and we look forward to supporting the uptake of this tool across industry.    Learn more on the NABERS website or dive into the details by checking out the NABERS embodied carbon rules in the PDF below. https://lnkd.in/gcW6k-9B
