FOOD SECURITY - Brazilian cherries in my Garden How lucky am I? I now have two types of Brazilian Cherries fruiting in my garden. I planted both only 3 or 4 years ago. I posted a picture a month ago (bottom right) showing the Grumichama (Eugenia brasiliensis) beginning to flower. 🍒 To my surprise a couple of days ago I found some beautiful ripe fruit - first time fruiting - and I picked a whole bowl (image top right). 🍒 On the other side of my garden is my other Brazilian Cherry (Eugenia uniflora) also called Surinam Cherry. 🍒 The Grumichama is quite sweet and very much like a Eurasian Cherry (prunus avium) - the one we normally call "a Cherry"! 🍒 The Surinam Cherry is actually really sour but after you recover from the shock you want to have another one. It's amazing what food you can grow in a small suburban garden. Food security is a growing problem as climate events become more extreme. Think about what you can grow in your garden, outside walls or balcony. Herbs can be grown indoors in a very small space. And growing food is good for the soul. CLIMATE EDUCATION - Ocean Plastic Waste Did you know that the Philippines contributes more plastic pollution to the Ocean than any other country? And almost twice as much as the whole "rest of the world" combined? As of February 2023, the Philippines contributes 356,371 metric tons of plastic to the Ocean annually. It seems unimagineable to me that this small island Nation could be so dominant in its plastic contribution, compared to say China. Why is this so? The problem with the Philippines is that it is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, with a 36,289 kilometre coastline and 4,820 plastic emitting rivers. It is estimated to emit 35% of the ocean’s plastic. By contrast China, for example, generates 10 times the plastic waste that Malaysia does. However, 9% of Malaysia’s total plastic waste is estimated to reach the ocean, in comparison to China’s 0.6%. So the issues are amount of coastline, number of "plastic emitting rivers" and how well waste in managed (including recycling, etc) in each country. CLIMATE FUTURES - Food Security I'm excited to find that my Red Dacca banana plant has flowered and is starting to fruit. This is the first time it's fruited. Here's what I spotted when watering my garden yesterday. The hands are still young with their white flowers showing and the skin is currently deep purple. (See pic on left). Here's what they should look like when mature. See pic of a mature bunch - not mine yet (right). The Red banana variety (Musa acuminata Red Dacca) is found on the island of Mauritius with custard-coloured, semi-soft flesh surrounded by a thick, brick red to maroon-coloured peel. CLIMATE EDUCATION - Renewable Energy - How's it going globally? Recent data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows that seven countries now generate nearly all of their electricity from renewable energy sources (97-100%). Good News? Well ... It sounds promising, but look at the seven countries: ✅ Albania ✅ Bhutan ✅ Nepal ✅ Paraguay ✅ Iceland ✅ Ethiopia ✅ Democratic Republic of Congo Not exactly the highest GHG emitters on the planet! Another 50 countries generated at least 50% of their energy from renewables between 2021 and 2022. While this did include 11 European countries, it is painfully clear from the map in the article that the highest emitting countries are the slowest to make the shift to renewables at scale. CLIMATE EDUCATION - Food Security Have you heard of a Grumichama? Otherwise known as a Brazilian Cherry. I planted one about three years ago and it has just started flowering for the first time (pic on left). I can't wait to try the fruit in a few weeks time and will post pics when they arrive. My lemon tree is ending its season, but already has flowers for the next season. I can't wait to have enough end of season sweet lemons to make Limoncello! Global heating is moving the tropics further south in the Southern Hemisphere and further north in the Northern Hemisphere. Start planting. The best way to provide some food security for yourself, even if you only have a balcony, is to grow food - in pots, as creepers on fences, in vegetable boxes. It's so wonderful to be able to pick your own food from the garden or balcony. Taking a trip down memory lane. In my latest 'home project', I have been working my way through old boxes of archives to cull what I no longer need or want, unclutter my study and library, and trim my sails for a less cluttered future, to write my next book. I stumbled across an old photo from 2010 when I was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal for Academic Excellence for my PhD on "Evolving Education". Seeing the colours I was wearing, I realise now that I must have already been a Ukraine supporter without recognising it at the time! I wish I still had that Doctoral Graduation gown so I could wear it at the launch of the Ukrainian translation of my Oxford book "The Future: A Very Short Introduction". Coming soon! Stay tuned!
