We're ending the week with fantastic news: our network's latest publication is now out! Maria Jacinta Xon Riquiac, Lucero Sobrino Huarcaya and Azucena Moran challenge the epistemic assumptions of global deliberation and instead invite us to reconsider situated views from indigenous communities and contemporary peoples on what their participation can entail. Join us for a report back session on 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 7𝐭𝐡, 15 𝐂𝐄𝐓 where GloCAN's Lucas Veloso will present his findings on the world’s first Global Assembly. Lucas' research examines the conditions under which this global experiment in deliberation created opportunities for assembly members to learn and transform their political identities, but also unintentionally promoted vulnerabilities. His presentation will be followed by reactions of former Global Assembly cluster facilitator Fatima ZAMBA and researcher Eva Schmidt. The session will be chaired by Granaz Baloch. What does it mean to institutionalise global citizen deliberation? Who is asking for this democratic innovation in the first place? My latest collab with Global Citizens’ Assembly Network's Melisa Ross and Iswe Foundation's Claire Mellier for Democracy R&D's New Frontiers Project. Available open access: https://lnkd.in/gwBi9RtE

Resist divisive discourses. Combat spin. Embrace the crazy idea at the core of democracy: radical equality. These are some of the powerful messages we heard at the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬’ 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲 of the Democratic Odyssey. 200 residents of Europe of dozens of nationalities met in Athens over the past weekend to understand how to face the multiple crises that affect Europeans individually and collectively. A special shoutout to the observers - over 30 highly committed 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 (!) who spent the weekend learning and reflecting on how transnational deliberation happens. Guest starring our co-lead Melisa Ross as observation coordinator. 🎉 And a monumental kudos to the equally monumental efforts of the core team that culminated in such a generative space. Stay tuned for the next stops in this journey! ℹ️ You can learn more about the Democratic Odyssey here: https://lnkd.in/ghpm7UC9 🎲 Read about the composition of the Assembly here: https://lnkd.in/d6_tJykQ European University Institute School of Transnational Governance The Democracy & Culture Foundation Athens Democracy Forum European Alternatives Missions Publiques Mehr Demokratie e.V.
