At #COP29, a crucial breakthrough: negotiators have agreed on new standards for UN-led global carbon markets under Article 6.4. What does this mean for Australia's Indigenous-led projects? As Carbon Market Institute (CMI)'s #COP29 priorities highlight, this development is particularly significant for the Indo-Pacific region's Indigenous-led projects. Australia’s Traditional Owners are leading the way in developing Indigenous-led carbon projects. Their approach aligns with the International Indigenous Peoples Forum's call for "direct, dedicated, simplified and equitable" financing mechanisms. Working alongside Queensland's Traditional Owners, we're implementing new frameworks for market engagement that prioritise Indigenous sovereignty over carbon projects. This includes transparent and just revenue-sharing models and collaborative approaches to measuring and communicating cultural and ecological co-benefits that go beyond carbon. With Australia's bid to co-host #COP31 alongside Pacific nations, the integration of Traditional Knowledge into carbon markets has never been more critical. We're particularly focused on: 🌏 Collaborative monitoring approaches that centre Indigenous voices 🌏 Creating simplified financial pathways ensuring fair returns 🌏 Supporting Traditional Owner engagement with market decision-makers Want to discuss how these frameworks could benefit your community or project? Let's connect about turning these approaches into real community benefits. #IndigenousKnowledge #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction #COP29 #CMI Gerry Dyer GAICD Lorena Vazquez

Very exciting news from our CEO, Gerry Dyer GAICD, at the AER Summit. ERAC has announced the prioritisation of the development of four new carbon methods. This will generate new project development opportunities and market access to more regions and communities across Australia. #ACCUs #ERAC #carbonprojectdevelopment #methoddevelopment #carboncredits
Just heard Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy. Great news from the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee (ERAC) at 2024 Australasian Emissions Reduction (AER) Summit this morning. It’s been announced that four proposed carbon methods have been shortlisted for development, these are: Improved Native Forest Management in Multiple-use Public Forests (NSW DCCEEW) Extending Savanna Fire Management to the Northern Arid Zone (Indigenous Dessert Alliance), expanding the areas where SFM can be undertaken, providing greater economic opportunities and connection to Country to First Nations Peoples and communities across Northern Australia. Improved Avoided Clearing of Native Regrowth to incentive returning regrowth at high risk of reclearing (Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation) Reducing disturbance of coastal and floodplain wetlands by managing ungulates like water buffalo and pigs (Northern Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance and University of Queensland).

Assessing the potential value and risks of natural capital on your land is complex. It requires deep technical knowledge as well as a holistic understanding of the ecosystem’s dynamics. If you’re a #landholder, #carbondeveloper, or #investor looking to maximise the potential of your natural assets, don’t leave your decision-making to chance. By using a comprehensive, data-driven approach, you can confidently assess your land’s opportunities and make strategic, informed decisions that align with your financial and environmental goals. At Gondwana, we're pioneering a comprehensive approach that delivers real value and actionable insights, going beyond the basic carbon assessments offered in the broader market. Savanna burning projects offer valuable opportunities and resources for Indigenous communities, allowing them to go back to Country, transfer traditional knowledge to younger generations, and generate revenue to invest in what is important for their communities. Despite these benefits, there have been some challenges too. The carbon industry is still evolving and has experienced some issues, as highlighted in a recent article https://lnkd.in/gQ7RMd-s. Although new guidelines and rules have addressed some of these problems, and practices have significantly improved in recent years, there remains room for further progress. At Gondwana Carbon, we are committed to supporting and building a natural capital market place that champions and rewards Indigenous leadership, project integrity, commercial transparency, and mutual accountability. We believe that co-development, consultation and collaboration are fundamental to achieving the best environmental and social outcomes. This is reflected in our efforts to foster fair partnerships grounded in mutual respect and shared long-term goals. We focus on providing project technical support, skill and knowledge sharing, and creating commercial strategies that ensure Indigenous communities receive top dollar for their ACCUs, while also sharing their unique stories.

Good literacy skills are not a given. Children's reading abilities vary greatly, and, on average, today, fewer children are reading than ever before. This issue is even more pronounced among Indigenous communities. #Indigenous people live in 90 different countries and play a vital role in cultural and sustainable development. #Literacy is essential not just for #education but also for preserving the languages and traditions of #Indigenouscultures. Literacy impacts many aspects of our lives, including how we understand and interact with the world around us. Indigenous peoples are particularly vulnerable to the effects of #climatechange due to factors like poverty, poorer health and nutrition, isolation from decision-making processes, insufficient land ownership rights, and violations against them. This year's theme, "Be a Proud Voice for Country," reminds us to amplify the voices of Indigenous peoples, celebrate their contributions, and advocate for their rights and knowledge. By supporting Indigenous literacy, we are helping to ensure their voices are heard, and their cultural heritage is sustained for future generations.

#WelcomePost We are excited to announce that Oscar Vosshage has joined the Gondwana Carbon team as our new Natural Capital Specialist! Oscar recently returned to Australia after working and studying in Europe - bringing extensive experience working with VCM-registered #ARR and #BlueCarbon projects and has collaborated with high-quality project developers to overcome commercialisation and sales challenges. Additionally, Oscar has worked on method development, addressing the technical and financial barriers prohibiting landowners from entering the voluntary carbon market with a focus on a blockchain-based MRV system. Oscar will be helping Lorena Vazquez in developing high-quality carbon projects that support local communities and biodiversity under the #ACCU and #VCM, with a focus on Australia and the greater Pacific. Join us in welcoming Oscar, and stay tuned for the positive impact we will be creating together! #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #ACCU #VCM #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction

Excellent week of learning and exchanging ideas on carbon market integrity, both from the supply and demand sides.
👏 Congrats to John Connor and the team at the Carbon Market Institute (CMI) for pulling off a thought-provoking two-day gathering at their 2nd Carbon Market & Investor Forum. 🔍 #carbonmarketintegrity was probably the single most resonant word of the conference. Beyond the words, I heard a lot about the "how" of working out the kinks in the ecosystem to overcome these crossroads in the market in which we find ourselves. There was a lot of emphasis and expectation around standards/methodology improvement and better and more transparent data and information. The role of ratings in carbon markets also got a lot of attention. 🙏 A big thanks to Ilona Millar for expertly managing the panel on "Enhanced Integrity for Investment-Grade Carbon Markets." Thanks also to my amazing co-panellists: Heather Layzell, Diego de Sartiges, Gerry Dyer GAICD. Our vision of what integrity was well aligned. It was great to meet up with so many Calyx Global clients and friends during the conference. Ciao and see you soon!

Due to its complexity, the carbon market can be particularly overwhelming for new participants. While many believe (understandably so) all carbon credits should reflect the same level of integrity, the reality is far more complicated. Unfortunately, though, not all carbon credits are created equal. Understanding the nuances and ensuring you invest in high-quality credits is crucial for genuine environmental impact. Our latest article discusses the challenges of investing in high-quality carbon credits, how carbon projects are set up, and the importance of understanding the market to avoid pitfalls.
