A social enterprise creating jobs for Young People facing barriers to employment.

About us

Good Cycles is a not-for-profit social enterprise supporting Young People in securing safe and meaningful jobs. We use social and environmental innovation to break down the employment barriers they face. Since 2013 we have been inspired by the bicycle to build a workforce for change. Given young people are more than twice as likely as older people to experience unemployment with a range of barriers to entering the labour market, Good Cycles strives to help them see a brighter future and to be a key part of a workforce that is delivering positive change for their communities. Our Youth Employment Program (YEP) uses a work-first approach, offering jobs to young people aged 18-28, with real income alongside tailored coaching and support. Our ‘learn by doing’ approach is offered with personal choice and an inclusive workplace to deliver technical and transferable skills. Good Cycles aims to have 30% of our staff within YEP, with all receiving adult wages and regular shifts. A combination of long-term employment and support builds confidence, stability, and networks, enabling Young People to continue to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential. We create meaningful jobs with a range of pathways, green jobs of the future and jobs that nurture communities to be cleaner, safer, and healthier. Most of our services use cargo and electric bikes as our primary mode of transport, ensuring we are more efficient and flexible than traditional utes and delivery trucks. Our operations are structured into four divisions: Good Spaces: Large scale green space and asset maintenance services. Good Deliveries: Specialist inner-city delivery, logistics and sustainability services delivered via e-bike. Good Bikes: Bike retail, servicing and tailored micro-mobility services. Good People: Specialist managed workforce partnerships (labour-hire) with values-aligned partners.

  • After nine remarkable years as CEO, Jaison Hoernel has decided to step down to spend more time with his family and pursue new opportunities. Jaison joined Good Cycles when it was a small, Melbourne-based organisation and, under his guidance, we have grown into a nationally recognised social enterprise. Today, we proudly employ 160 team members across four divisions in multiple cities, and we have positively impacted the lives of over 800 young people through meaningful job opportunities and career pathways. Jaison’s unwavering commitment and leadership have been integral to achieving these milestones. Late last year, the Board, Jaison and the Executive team worked collaboratively to plan a smooth leadership transition for 2025. While we are sad to see Jaison go, we are thrilled to announce that Kirra Johnson, currently our Executive Lead of People & Impact, has been appointed as Good Cycles’ new CEO. With a deep understanding of our mission and values, Kirra brings a wealth of expertise and passion to lead us into an exciting new chapter. To support Kirra in this new phase, Malcolm Garrow, our current interim Chair, will bring further stability by taking on the role of Board Chair. Jaison's growth legacy combined with Kirra’s forward-thinking vision, ensures a seamless transition that will allow us to continue strengthening our partnerships and delivering on our shared goals. The full media release regarding these changes can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/gZMwzqyA

The good folks at Otway Odyssey have chosen us to be their 2025 Charity Partner 👏   The Otway Odyssey is Australia’s most respected MTB marathon events. Taking place in the renowned trails at Forrest in the Otway Ranges, the premier 100km event is a tough day out for any rider – attracting Olympians and National Champions through to weekend warriors who seek an epic challenge on an epic course.   Not ready for a race that big? • We're thrilled to share that the eBike Hub collaboration between Good Cycles and RideKola has been awarded the prestigious Bike Culture Award at the 2024 Cycling Luminaries Awards.   This award recognises an initiative that demonstrated exceptional innovation in promoting long-term behavioural change, emphasising the importance of communication, presentation, inclusivity, and safety in driving cultural shifts.   Our eBike Hubs at the three Building Communities social housing developments in Flemington, Prahran, and Brighton was recognised for the meaningful impact of introducing riding to residents and creating an active community of eBike users.   By providing the bicycles alongside confidence building training and support, we're breaking down barriers to cycling and creating a more inclusive, sustainable transport ecosystem. Our initiative directly addresses transport accessibility during the current cost of living crisis, alongside contributing to the positive wellbeing of residents, the local community and overall road congestion.   At Good Cycles and RideKola, we believe mobility is more than movement - it's nurturing communities to be more inclusive, greener and safer.
