🔍 Looking for high-performing equity funds? Consider maximum relative drawdown alongside alpha. At Hamilton12, we believe investors should weigh multiple factors when selecting investment funds. New research highlights that combining maximum relative drawdown with alpha can be an effective metric for identifying strong equity funds. 📉 What is Maximum Relative Drawdown? It’s the worst trailing performance relative to the benchmark over a period, highlighting potential downside risk. ⚠️ Why is it important? While alpha measures risk-adjusted returns, drawdown shows how much an investor could lose during underperformance. 📈 What does the research show? Studies of U.S. and Australian equity funds indicate that funds with high alpha and low drawdown outperform those with high alpha and high drawdown. 📌 Our Findings Our analysis of Australian equity funds over the last 20 years reinforces these insights. Funds with high alpha and low drawdown delivered an average annual return of 0.9% above the benchmark, while those with high drawdown fell behind by 0.7%. 💡 Key takeaway: Considering maximum relative drawdown alongside alpha can improve fund selection outcomes and manage downside risk. Read Dr Jason Hall's full analysis on maximum relative drawdown in fund selection on Livewire Markets or watch the interview with Andrew Geoghegan on ausbiz. Hamilton12 was pleased to participate in the IBR Conferences Pty Ltd 6th Annual Asset Allocation Strategies Forum in Sydney this week. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage in discussions that influence strategic asset allocation for various investor needs. Our Managing Director, Richard McDougall, joined a panel session moderated by Geoff Warren alongside, Jeronimo Harrison, Jonathan Chung, and Michael Berg, discussing asset allocation strategies for accumulation versus pension members. One key theme that emerged was the benefit of greater allocations to Australian equities, supported by dedicated, zero-tax active management strategies to optimise exposure to franking credits - an increasingly relevant consideration for after-tax returns. Special thanks to Jay Nair and IBR Conferences Pty Ltd for hosting such a valuable and expertly organised event. These forums are essential for advancing knowledge across the investment management landscape, and we look forward to more collaborative discussions.
