We strive to reduce homelessness and housing insecurity by providing safe secure homes to our community.
About us
Havelock Housing Limited is a dedicated community housing organisation that is committed to reducing homelessness. We do this by managing multiple property portfolios such as Canberra's iconic community housing development Havelock House, along with Gunghalin Singles Accommodation and Disability Housing to name a few. Overall we manage 300 properties and support over 370 tenants. Havelock House opened in 1951, and became home to public servants. There was less demand for hostel accommodation during the 1970s, and under The Hon Malcolm Fraser’s government in 1981, the sale of Havelock House was announced. The sale did not proceed, and a small section of the building became an office for the Australian Federal Police. In 1983, the first Hawke Ministry handed over full control and use of the building to the AFP despite intense lobbying by various welfare groups. The decision, when made public, elicited a quick and powerful response from concerned community groups. By early July a picket line was in place outside Havelock House, which remained in place for 16 weeks through a Canberra winter. The Australian Social Welfare Union coordinated the picket with support from the ACT Council of Social Services. Numerous unions, community organisations and hundreds of individuals gave their time. The picket ended in December 1983 with a settlement, which committed the government to: • Transfer Havelock House to low-cost housing use when alternative office accommodation was built for the AFP • Undertake an inquiry into homelessness in the ACT and surrounding regions. The building was officially handed over from the Department of Territories to Havelock Housing Association on 10th April 1988, and the first residents moved in. Since then we have ensured affordable accommodation for people on low incomes. Properties in other locations across Canberra gradually came under the Association’s management and today we are one of the largest Community Housing providers in the ACT.

As Havelock Housing Chair, I want to inform our friends and stakeholders that our CEO, Tim Sunwoo, has stepped down from his position to take on a new role as the CEO of Venture Housing in Darwin. Tim has played a pivotal role in guiding Havelock through a period of growth and transformation. During Tim's tenure, Havelock secured land and Development Approval to build new affordable housing units in Whitlam, established low-cost accommodation for Trans and Gender-Diverse individuals, and repurposed a building to house vulnerable women at risk of homelessness. All the while, Tim juggled the many facets of Havelock's daily operations. Thank you, Tim, for your dedication to Havelock's goals and ambitions. We wish you all the best in your new role and your move to a warmer climate! We are pleased to announce that Kylie Maidens, Head of Tenancy and Assets, has been appointed interim CEO. Kylie brings valuable experience and leadership skills to steer Havelock through this transition period. Carol Croce

As you may be aware, Folk House @ Havelock was nominated and considered a finalist in the inaugural Lifeline Spirt of Canberra Awards. I attended the awards today with Carol Croce (Havelock Board Chair) and Lillith Jansen (ex-tenant of Folk House). What can I say…. WOW!! What a wonderful room to sit in, all finalists across all categories were so inspiring and amazing. It was wonderful to see what the Canberra community is achieving and doing for the people of Canberra. Many do their vital work quietly and humbly; these awards are a great way to shine a light and show the impact that they are having in the community. Thank you everyone and well done.
