About us

For over 90 years, our members have trusted us to protect their health and wellbeing, and in return we’ve provided quality cover and healthcare that’s right for them. Because as Australia’s largest not-for-profit health fund, we believe in delivering our members a level of care that’s uncommon. From humble beginnings in 1932, we’ve grown to become the nation’s largest not-for-profit health fund, helping to protect the health and wellbeing of over 1.8 million Australians with health, life, travel or pet insurance. And we remain constant to our not-for-profit charter, continuing to provide the highest standard of healthcare while returning more benefits to our members. We’re also proud of our many industry firsts. Over the years, we’ve been at the forefront of healthcare innovation, from introducing the first multicover plan to “cover the gap” in extras services, to opening one of the first health fund operated dental centre networks and launching Australia’s first on-demand injury cover*. Because we believe in making healthcare understandable, affordable and high quality for our members, they’re empowered to make informed decisions about their health. Through the HCF Catalyst program, we continue to invest in the future of Australia’s health by supporting small businesses with big ideas, and fund researchers working to improve health outcomes for all Aussies through the HCF Research Foundation. We’re also committed to investing in the health and wellbeing of our staff. At HCF, we value diversity, inclusion and equality in the workplace, and are dedicated to creating a working culture where staff can flourish. We believe that giving employees a safe, healthy and sustainable work environment is a priority. * Issued by HCF Life. Consider the PDS and TMD at getflip.com.au.

  • In celebration of our partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), we ran an employee competition which was won by Jessie Burling, our Senior Ancillary Health Benefits Specialist, who shared her passion for improving healthcare access in remote and regional Australia. Jessie was given the opportunity to experience a day in the life of the RFDS crew. She travelled to the RFDS world-class aeromedical facility in Adelaide, where she boarded the Pilatus PC-12 aircraft, proudly bearing the HCF logo, and set off to the small regional town of Andamooka in South Australia. Jessie spent the day with the Flying Doctor Primary Health Care Team and the patients they visited to see how critical their services are to these remote communities. “I was shocked to learn there’s such an extensive health disparity that exists in remote areas like Andamooka, where there’s such limited access to health services. It was very humbling to be able to spend the day with the Flying Doctors to see all the contributions they make to improve the health outcomes of people like the residents of Andamooka. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.” Find out more about our RRDS partnership: www.hcf.com.au/rfds

  • This month many of our passionate people volunteered their time to help spread holiday cheer, thanks to our partnership with The Smith Family. Our team members came together to write holiday cards to each of the 1,500 sponsored students who HCF is supporting through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. The personalised cards were filled with messages of positivity and inspiration, giving students extra motivation towards their studies so they can thrive now and into their futures. Thank you to The Smith Family for the opportunity to give back and take part in such a meaningful activity. Through our partnership, we aim to make a lasting difference in the lives of young Australians in need, reinforcing the importance of education in building healthier, more equitable communities. We wish all students a very happy festive season.

  • As a major national partner of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, we're proud to support the Flying Doctor podcast, telling the remarkable stories of real patients and their families who've experienced the challenges and triumphs of life in the bush. In episode #117, we hear the story of remote nurse Ryan Franks, who was the only health practitioner on duty in the remote coastal community of WA's Coral Bay in 2017. When Ryan realised he was having a heart attack, he knew his only chance of survival was to treat himself, so he successfully took his own bloods, performed an ECG and administered life-saving drugs to treat the blood clot that was threatening his heart. • Early detection of health conditions is critical for our long-term health. That’s why we offer our staff free access to preventative screenings at HCF locations like our head offices, and dental and eyecare centres. Thanks to our partnership with MoleMap, we offer free head-to-toe skin cancer checks for our staff throughout the year. In the last year we had 144 employees get a skin check by a MoleMap melanographer, with 224 moles/lesions imaged and sent for further dermatologist review, and several skin cancers identified and referred on for treatment.   Rebecca Cook, our Senior Projects and Administration Officer, attended a MoleMap skin check last year and was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer. “Last year, I attended one of our Mole Map skin checks. Honestly, it’s not something I would have considered otherwise. During the check, they found a spot on my face I had dismissed as a stubborn pimple that just couldn’t take a hint. But it turned out to be skin cancer. Thanks to HCF, it was detected early, the healing journey was smooth and my results following are clear.” Find out more about our MoleMap skin checks: https://lnkd.in/gc7MBtXV
