Australia expands dialysis services in remote First Nations communities. The Australian government has allocated $12.04m (A$18.58m) to establish new dialysis units in remote First Nations communities. Seven remote locations have been selected for the new services, namely Alekarenge, Galiwin’ku, Maningrida, and Yuendumu in the Northern Territory, Jigalong and Warburton in Western Australia, and Normanton in Queensland. These areas were chosen based on factors such as local demand, the distance to existing services, and community support for establishing local treatment facilities. Indeed, the labour market added 64,000 new jobs in September alone – an astonishing figure given the backdrop of anaemic economic growth and slowing business investment. The Australian labour market appears to be defying the laws of economics. Despite the continuing slowdown in economic activity – real GDP growth was only 1.0% in the June quarter – the overall balance in the labour market has not yet shown signs of weakening. The unemployment rate steadied at around 4.1% this year, up from 3.5% during the height of the post-pandemic boom. But this remains well below the normal range in Australia (5.0% to 6.0%), and at the very bottom of the range economists estimate to constitute ‘full employment’ (4.0% to 4.5%). However, given the amount of sensitive information typically stored within healthcare systems, as well as the industry’s reliance on technology, this also makes the sector extremely appealing to threat actors. Reasons include valuable patient data stores, the constant flow of that same patient data between healthcare institutions and other third parties, the use of diverse and increasingly connected medical devices, vulnerabilities in legacy systems, and more.
