We recently caught up with Sarah Kennedy, HESTA Digital Product Lead, who shared her valuable insights on career progression and the evolving digital landscape in superannuation. Sarah’s exciting career journey includes stints as an internet salesperson, personal assistant, youth group worker, and even a banana farmer. Coupled with her unique mix of studies in politics and an MBA in accounting, these diverse experiences reflect her commitment to staying curious and open to all learning opportunities. “You don’t necessarily have to know what you want to do from the beginning. Trying new things and learning what you're good at can really help you progress in your career,” Sarah shared. This mindset came to life when Sarah took on a role manually entering insurance applications. She noticed an opportunity to improve the process, which caught the attention of her colleagues and led her into a digital product owner role. This change coincided with the rise of digital services, where enhanced service availability and self-service became central to the experience design process. Sarah's passion for putting customers at the heart of the digital design ultimately brought her to her current role at HESTA. Since joining HESTA three years ago, Sarah has significantly developed her leadership skills through managing a team, crediting the Leadership programs available at HESTA for playing a significant role in her growth. These leadership skills have enabled her to oversee critical digital projects, including the HESTA App, from its inception and launch to its ongoing enhancements, as well as Future Planner, HESTA's online digital tool, which enables members to see how different actions can impact their retirement. Earlier this week, HESTA’s Head of Portfolio Management Jeff Brunton attended a ceremony to celebrate the topping out of the Health Translation Hub (HTH) in Sydney’s Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct, a 15-storey health education and research building that has been under construction since September 2023. The project was backed by a consortium including ISPT and superannuation funds UniSuper and HESTA (through its healthcare property mandate with ISPT), as well as developer the Plenary Group. The ceremony was also attended by the NSW Minister for Health, The Hon. Ryan Park, MP. Around 80% of HESTA’s 1 million plus members work in healthcare and community services, and this investment will contribute to delivering stable long-term returns for members, supported by strong expected future demand for tenancy in what promises to be one of Australia’s pre-eminent health precincts. #HESTASuper #HTH #Education #Infrastructure Image by Ken Leanfore

Earlier this week, HESTA CEO Debby Blakey met with Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the United Nations Global Compact, after she participated in the Uniting Business conference, an event focused on shaping the future of sustainable business in Australia. Ms Ojiambo leads the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. During their meeting, they discussed responsible investment, active ownership, and shared focuses such as climate action and its intersection with nature loss, gender equality, and decent work. We believe these areas are pivotal in shaping a better future for HESTA members and society. The United Nations estimates that 80% of people displaced by climate change are women, exacerbating economic vulnerabilities and risks of exploitation. Addressing climate change is crucial for protecting the rights of women and girls globally. #HESTASuper #Sustainability #ResponsibleInvestment #UnitingBusiness

Fantastic to have our CEO, Debby Blakey, appear earlier this week at The Australian Financial Review’s Super & Wealth Summit, representing our 1m+ members as she discussed the big issues in superannuation and retirement. As trusted stewards of our members’ hard-earned retirement savings, we focus on delivering Super with Impact™ to help create long-term investment value. This means engaging with companies we invest in on material issues, such as good governance and inequality, that we believe present a financial risk to our members’ investments. https://lnkd.in/g7UR8PYj #HESTASuper #Superannuation #Retirement

HESTA is proud to be a signatory on a statement to global governments addressing biodiversity loss at the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) in Cali, Colombia. Natural capital and biodiversity loss is not only a threat to the environment and communities that depend on it, but can also present a material financial risk to companies, shareholders, and the global economy. We firmly believe that investors have a crucial role in safeguarding the planet's biodiversity and by doing so, supporting the long-term performance of our portfolio and the retirement savings of our one million plus members. Kim Farrant, General Manager of Responsible Investment at HESTA said: “To address this systemic challenge, governments must implement strong policies, transition plans and ambitious national targets. Our more than one million HESTA members are typically invested in a diverse range of global assets, so greater government action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss can help protect their retirement savings."
