Holding Redlich recently partnered with the National Association of Women in Construction (AU) to offer a legal support hotline for women facing workplace challenges that is free of charge to individual NAWIC members. Led by Workplace Relations Partner Evan Willis and Associate Alexandria Anthony, this NAWIC initiative aims to support women in the construction industry facing workplace challenges and also reflects our commitment to promoting workplace equality and supporting women in their careers. To learn more about this service, including its terms, visit NAWIC’s website in the comments below. #WorkplaceEquality #LegalSupport #WomenInConstruction #DiversityAndInclusion
NAWIC represents a large community of women working in the Australian construction industry, as well as those that have formerly worked, or are considering joining. We know that women in construction face higher barriers of entry, progressions and fulfilment compared to their male peers and counterparts. At NAWIC, we are exploring ways to provide practical and tangible support for our members as they navigate these barriers, and the unacceptable and sometimes unlawful behaviours that come along with them. We know as a result of our Not so Little Things Affecting Women in Construction Survey, that over 81% of women face microaggressions in the workplace. One of the barriers which has been highlighted as a result of the report is that women are fearful of speaking up about this behaviour, women are not sure of their rights within the workplace, and worry about the consequences, including potential loss of employment. NAWIC is aware that our members are looking for legal advice and support in these times. On this basis we are introducing a new legal advice hotline for NAWIC members. This hotline will connect members who are concerned they are being treated unlawfully with a qualified lawyer who can provide up to one hour of tailored legal employment advice at NAWIC's cost. This included support for those who have been: 🚫 Sexually harassed, 🚫 Discriminated against at work, 🚫 Underpaid or not paid properly, 🚫 Denied access to leave or other entitlements, 🚫 Denied access to flexible working arrangements, 🚫 Fired from work unfairly, 🚫 Bullied at work. We have nominated Holding Redlich to provide this service to our members. To access this service please email nawic@holdingredlich.com with your NAWIC membership number, or call Holding Redlich Associate - Alexandria Anthony a call on 03 9321 9753. If you need support accessing your NAWIC membership number, please contact our team at admin@nawic.com.au. Please note that Holding Redlich are required to keep any information disclosed confidential and will not be providing this information to NAWIC or your employer.

As Australia's construction industry navigates a complex landscape, the sector anticipates significant changes in 2025. Here are some key insights from our latest article: ✅ New financial disclosures relating to climate impacts now need to be made by large Australian companies. ✅ Cladding remains a significant issue. ✅ NSW's Security of Payment Act continues to play a crucial role in ensuring prompt payment within the state's construction industry. ✅ The extension of Phase 3 and Phase 4 of the Project Trust Account regime in Queensland provides additional relief to smaller operators in the building industry. ✅ Changes to Victoria's Security of Payment Act proposed in 2024 could potentially be passed this year, expanding the types of claims and simplifying the adjudication process. These trends highlight the ongoing shifts and developments shaping the future of the sector. The Strata Schemes Legislation Amendment Bill 2024, introduced to Parliament late last year, proposes significant reforms to strata management to improve accountability across the sector. Key changes include: 1. Increased disclosure obligations: Strata managers will face tighter disclosure requirements, with greater oversight on strata management agreements 2. New statutory duty: Building managers will need to act in the best interests of the owners corporation 3. Governance improvements: Strata committee members will be required to undertake training to enhance governance standards 4. Developer accountability: Tougher penalties for developers failing to provide maintenance/construction records at the first AGM 5. Extended Liability: The Bill extends the statute of limitations for damages claims related to common property maintenance from 2 to 6 years. If the Bill passes, the reform will increase owners corporations' exposure to claims, especially for latent defects. Stay informed on the latest changes. We extend our best wishes for a joyful holiday season and a successful 2025. Our offices remain open with staff available to assist during this period. We look forward to reconnecting with everyone in the new year. #HappyHolidays2024

The holiday season can be a difficult time for those in need. This December, our offices teamed up with some of our long standing Social Justice Fund charity partners to collect hamper donations. In Sydney, our donations supported Youth Off The Streets, a not-for-profit organisation working with young people, their families and the broader community to offer safety, support and tangible opportunities. Our Brisbane office had the privilege of collaborating with Brisbane Youth Service to provide pantry essentials and treats for young people in need, supporting those who are struggling to afford basic food items. The Melbourne office worked with DjirraVIC, an organisation providing practical support to First Nations people who have or are currently experiencing family violence by donating food items to support them during this time of year. Thank you to all who donated! Learn more about our community involvement efforts below. #YouthofftheStreets #Djirra #BrisbaneYouthService #HRpeople #givingback

Together with Canberra Youth Theatre, we're proud to announce Sarah Matthews as the winner of the 2024 Emerging Playwright Commission. Sarah's play, 'The Hit List', dives into the complexities of sexism and gender-based violence during the final days of Year 12 muck-up week. It's a bold exploration of class, gender, and institutional responses, brought to life through an ensemble cast of eight characters. Chosen from over 60 submissions nationwide, Sarah's work exemplifies the creativity and courage this program seeks to foster. This partnership between Holding Redlich and Canberra Youth Theatre highlights our long-standing commitment to supporting the arts and nurturing emerging voices. Elizabeth Carroll, Head of our Canberra Office, shared: "We are excited to see Sarah's play and will continue to support the Commission and Canberra Youth Theatre in the years to come." Luke Rogers, Artistic Director & CEO of Canberra Youth Theatre, emphasised the importance of the Commission in providing a platform for young writers. He notes the program's legacy of supporting the next generation of playwrights and its role in fostering creativity, artistic excellence, and innovation, helping young voices make their mark on Australian theatre. Read more about Sarah and the program in the comments. Stay tuned for her play! #AustralianTheatre #WomenInTheArts #NextGenCreatives #EmergingPlaywright
