A new report out today from Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reveals the devastating reality - that homelessness kills - and the death rate is rising. People without homes are dying at 1.8 times the rate of the general population, with the annual death toll rising from 914 in 2012-13 to 1,489 in 2021-22. Deaths of despair from suicide and overdose are the major causes of death. Our CEO, Kate Colvin will be in Parliament today with the Home Time delegation talking to MPs about the need for housing and support for homeless young people. This shocking new report highlights how urgent and important investments in homelessness are. You can catch Kate talking about the homelessness deaths report with Patricia Karvelas on RN Breakfast this morning here https://lnkd.in/gFuDnGfT https://lnkd.in/gds-cMZC Read our media release https://lnkd.in/gN3DGy6J

Today we launched new research by Impact Economics that reveals the enormous pressure faced by homelessness services working at the coalface of the housing crisis. It revealed that the number of Australians at risk of homelessness has surged by 63% to 3.0 million people. Services are so overwhelmed that over two weeks, 39% had to close their doors at some point to manage demand and 83% couldn't answer phones at all times. The result is people who desperately need help can't get through to someone who can help them. A big shout out to the organisations who funded the research: Homelessness NSW Mission Australia Wesley Mission Uniting Communities Council To Homeless Persons Domestic Violence NSW Launch Housing St Mary's House of Welcome Safe and Equal Meli Southern Youth and Family Services Toward Home Women's & Girls' Emergency Centre (WAGEC) To turn this situation around, we've also launched a new campaign No One Turned Away to fight for the resources homelessness services need to meet people's need for help Read the report https://lnkd.in/gueC5Rer Join the campaign https://lnkd.in/gX47DJKf!

Raising the rate would make an immediate and direct impact on homelessness reduction, because if people have enough income to pay rent so many people won’t become homeless
In a piece for the Sunday Telegraph ACOSS CEO Cassandra Goldie AO shared her reflections on the government’s recently announced back-to-back budget. In the article she wrote: "Fiscal restraint and improved economic indicators mean little to those forced to go hungry, pitch tents or ration medicine, their needs unmet by successive governments that know what to do, but refuse to do it." We have one of the lowest income support payments among wealthy nations forcing millions of people into poverty. And Hundreds of thousands of people are in acute financial distress and turning to community services for help, but government funding has not kept pace with demand. ACOSS strongly urge the government to #raisetherate of JobSeeker and related payments to at least $82 a day in line with the pension and above the poverty line and provide critical frontline services with the funding they need. Yesterday was #WorldHomelessnessDay and #WorldMentalHealth day - a great opportunity to release this brief discussion paper that calls for an urgent expansion of housing and support options for people with psychosocial disabilities who are also experiencing homelessness. At this time of major change in disability policy and movements in mental health and homelessness policy we have a unique opportunity to join the dots and address the enormous support gaps that result in so many people cycling in and out of acute care and homelessness. Our Child Homelessness Snapshot 2024 highlights how lack of access to housing, income support that is too low, and inadequate funding of homelessness services is resulting in homeless children and families being unable to escape homelessness. This #HW2024 we need action on social housing investment and increased income support, and significant new investment in homelessness services to meet demand.
