Hulsbosch – TODAY 12yrs ago, we launched the repositioning and rebrand of Rebel Sport, Australia’s no.1 sports retailer. 12yrs later, it’s still effective - a standout, international award winning brand identity and an acclaimed champion in the retail space. Today, it enjoys an impressive brand awareness ranking of 92%. The refreshed brand represents the biggest change in the communication of the business. Launch article by Mumbrella, in 2012 - https://lnkd.in/gSGZdqqc Favourite comments:- “What the hell is this? Why fix something that’s not broken?” “Whoever designed it was lacking creativity on the day.” “Looks like a classic amateur design mistake to me.” “The industry, clients and public deserve better.” “This will be held up as an example of a solid failure.” Scope of work included - brand strategy, positioning, logo, visual and verbal identity, environment and retail design, brand launch campaign and brand guidelines. Many thanks to Rosemary Martin, General Manager, eComm & Marketing at Rebel Sport who says, “Our partnership with Hulsbosch on a brand renewal set a course for business success, and today we enjoy the value and benefits of their brilliant brand work.”

Dear young aspiring designers. Here are answers to your most common questions. Hope this helps…. Q. What do you look for in a portfolio? A. When reviewing a portfolio, we are drawn to clarity and intention. Each project should tell a story: what problem were you solving, what was your process, and why did you make the decisions you did? Strong conceptual thinking is just as important as polished execution. It’s important to include projects that are as fully developed as possible, and demonstrate the use of a strong and consistent toolkit throughout all brand applications. This means making sure colours, fonts, imagery and graphic applications all have a consistent usage. Q. What makes a portfolio memorable? A. Projects that demonstrate THE IDEA!! Unique ideas and creative problem-solving make a portfolio memorable. Showcase your thought process, highlight what sets your approach apart, and ensure the work feels cohesive to convey a clear sense of your design identity. Work that demonstrates a simple and unique idea that underpins a brand execution will ensure that your portfolio will stand out. Q. What advice do you have to break into the industry? A. First: master the fundamentals of graphic design principles and our industry tools. Then go and create an ideas driven portfolio - as per above. Second: network, network, network to get yourself into a design studio (by any means necessary) to gain real-world experience. Then constantly seek feedback to refine your craft, learn the business side, understand strategy, develop your communication skills. Third: Never stop learning – ask questions, confirm thoughts, do short courses, try new stuff, fail, and try again, read and study the greats that came before you, and most importantly, seek guidance from mentors. Always remember to BE RESILIENT. You must embrace rejection, learn from it, better yourself and get stronger. Never give up!! Every single “no” leads you one step closer to a “yes”. Hang in there. You are closer than you think. Good luck. Hope this helps.
