“I was born in Hobart, Tasmania, and spent my early years there. Growing up as a teenager in a small, conservative state where being gay was illegal until I was in grade 10 was isolating. It wasn’t until I came out that I felt a strong desire to break free and discover who I truly was. At 21, after studying business at university, and a desire to work in the media, I packed up my car and drove to Sydney, ready to start fresh. Sydney was a world of discovery—new people, new experiences, and a newfound sense of freedom. For the first time, I felt like I could just be myself. I was taken under the wing of incredible mentors who helped me navigate the city. I even entered silly competitions and made friends, but over time, cracks began to show. I realised I was playing a character rather than being my authentic self. I had built a personality that masked deeper struggles, and trying to shed that facade was harder than I expected. It became clear I needed a change. I returned to Tasmania to work with a health and fitness company, traveling around Australia while rediscovering who I wanted to be. This period wasn’t easy—I battled depression and spent time in the hospital. But it taught me that no one else can fix your life; you have to take control. Simple things like staying active, connecting with the community, and prioritising mental health became my anchors. In Tasmania, I found inspiration in the evolving culture. MONA had transformed the state, bringing art, festivals, and inclusivity. It felt like the perfect place to build something meaningful for the LGBTQIA+ community. That’s how Get Out was born—a platform designed to connect and support the community, offering resources, activities, and education to address mental health challenges before they become crises. Today, I’m grateful for the people who stood by me through tough times. Their belief in me drives my passion to give back. With Get Out, I hope to create a safe space where no one feels alone—a one-stop community platform for the LGBTQIA+ community.” Brodie West Written and edited by Sara Singh Tak⚡️

“I moved to Australia in 2022 from China, leaving behind a workplace and society where women in their late 20s or early 30s face limitations. In China, cultural norms often stifle professional growth, particularly for women, leaving me feeling anxious and uncertain about my future. I worked as a product manager in tech, but I knew I needed a solution—somewhere I could grow freely. That’s when I decided to start over in Australia. Starting from scratch was far from easy. I began by studying English, and today, I’m pursuing my Master’s of Applied Information Technology at Victoria University. Landing at Melbourne Airport for the first time, seeing the policemen felt like stepping into an American TV show. I could understand basic English, but speaking it was another struggle. I doubted myself, felt ashamed, and often avoided conversations, preferring emails where I felt more confident. The cultural differences were obvious. In China, everything moves at lightning speed; here, life flows at a slower, more deliberate pace. It took time to adjust, but I knew that to grow, I had to push myself. Last year, I made a bold decision: attend networking events to build my confidence and connections. I’ve attended 45 events in just one year, stepping out of my comfort zone every single time. I observed, I learned, and slowly, I grew. With mentors, guidance from university, and the supportive Australian community, I became stronger and more confident—both as a professional and as a person. Australia gave me what I longed for: safety, security, and the freedom to grow on my own terms. Here, I’ve found friends, professional networks, and mentors who believe in me. For the first time, I don’t feel lonely for being different—I feel proud. To others like me, especially from China: do not let language hold you back. Your skills and knowledge matter. Australia is welcoming, open, and ready to embrace you. I see myself as a tree, once a small plant, now growing strong. Australia has given me the soil, water, and sunlight to flourish—and I know my roots can strengthen here.” Sia Shi Written and edited by Sara Singh Tak⚡️
