Here’s an update on UniSA’s Industry project on estimating plantation water use in the southeast of South Australia: This is our 2nd year of collecting tree water use and other related data for the industry project. Pasindu and Beng successfully inspected and maintained sensors and sites in addition to a couple of additional sites established. Last year’s data gave us an insight about the relevance of good sampling design and what’s involved in field sensor and instrument deployment. Watch out for Pasindu’s presentation at the #EGU this April in Vienna.

Last month, we had the privilege of collaborating with Dr. Sebastián Vargas Soto and his team at the Centro de Investigación e Innovación (CII) - Viña Concha y Toro in Pencahue, #Chile. The CII team has recently implemented #sapflow meters and #psychrometers in a cab-sav #vineyard. This integration of data is essential for their ongoing research into #evapotranspiration, with the final objective of developing a water-efficient #automatedirrigation system.

This early January we had the pleasure to meet and spend time with Dr. Carolina Valesca Hernandez Fuentes and her team at ARAUCO, in Concepcion, #Chile. With ICT International’s Sap Flow Meters and Psychrometers, Arauco has started to investigate the optimal plant water needs for young #Eucalyptus globulus in their research greenhouses. #plantwateruse #sapflowmeters #psychrometers #greenhouseresearch

University-Industry #collaboration at work. Researchers and industry staff just wrapped up field work in Renmark, South Australia this month, in time for this year’s shiraz season. 🍇 A full suite of soil-plant-environmental networked sensors were installed in a #vineyard to understand the key drivers of vine water status. 💧 The project, spearheaded by visiting PhD candidate Riccardo Mazzoleni (Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences - University of Bologna), is collecting data such as #soilmoisture as measured by Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensor, vine #waterstatus as measured by #sapflow sensor and stem #waterpotential, VPD, PAR, and other environmental parameters. 🍃

After a year in the planning, it was a thrill to see the Australian Smart Communities Summit 2024 come to reality this week in the City of Melbourne. It was a jam packed agenda which started with a pre-Summit workshop on Wednesday delivered in superb style by ASCA board member Nathaniel Bavinton and his crew from Urbis. The Welcome event at Melbourne Town Hall Portico was a lot of fun, with an incredible showcase of digital storytelling with the Melbourne City DNA display. The Summit itself on Thursday was jampacked with amazing and thought provoking speakers including 🗺 Bonnie Shaw, Adam Mowlam, Michael Healy, Carys Evans, Mandy O'Toole, Teng Chye Khoo, Marcus Westbury OAM, Tiffany Crawford 🌏, Ruby Tucker, Aditi Phansalkar, Peter Runcie. Our event MC was the enigmatic Zoe Eather who smashed it out of the park as usual. The long table Networking Dinner was quite an experience in the impressive surrounds of the InterContinental Melbourne. And to cap it all off the City of Melbourne team delivered a memorable E-bike study tour across the city to showcase some of their incredible work they are doing to improve their city using tech, data and innovation. A special shoutout to Laura Pfiester and Gemma Baxter for their work as our host partner leads. A massive shoutout to the ASCA board for their tireless work to bring this all together. Emmily Acton Simon Berryman Bronwen Clark Sumeet Nagpal ,MBA, Agile CSPO® Harman Singh Pearl Li Ng GAICD Liam Manning Nathaniel Bavinton . None of it would have been possible without the support of our partners. Host: City of Melbourne Platinum: nbn® Australia Gold: Urbis Exhibitors: Delos Delta, Minnovation Technologies, Meshed IoT, ICT International Pty Ltd Australia, VivaCity, VisionHQ, SAPHI, Design Anthology, Matter, Peclet Technology Thanks for Amber Anderson from Events Mate for the cool and calm event management support for the event. Looking forward to some more photos and videos to come out next week from our amazing photographer Rod Ceballos who was ably supported on the day by Gabrielle Hanley.

So good to see heaps more talks on #water fluxes at the TERN Australia OzFlux conference this year in Perth and meeting local hydrologists in person - Sally Thompson, Richard Silberstein, Simone Gelsinari, Thomas Van Niel, and Steve Charles. I think we may have outnumbered the carbon flux talks if we count Clare Stephens 😅 Missed you this year George Burba, Ph.D. ☑️and Beng Umali but presented results from the idea you first came up with in OzFlux Auckland on combining sapflux with flux towers 🌳 ICT International Pty Ltd Australia, LI-COR Environmental, University of Southern Queensland, James Cook University,
💧 Talking about the latest research and findings at the TERN Australia SuperSite at Fletcherview, Jo Owens presents her talk at the OzFlux conference on combining tree water use with flux measurements in a working Queensland cattle station.
