Using Data to Combat Energy Poverty An age-old political challenge—getting financial support to those who need it most—is being addressed by data and machine learning. A recent study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology highlights how outdated energy assistance policies in the U.S., created in the 1980s, are failing to address today’s realities. These programs were originally designed to assist northern states with heating but haven’t adapted to the growing energy burden in southern states, where rising temperatures and reliance on air conditioning are driving energy poverty. Using machine learning, the MIT team identified how and where energy burdens have shifted, emphasizing the need for targeted support in the South. This research is just as relevant here in Australia. As we saw this week in NSW, where AEMO sought additional reserves and the government urged residents to reduce energy usage during peak times. Australia may be facing the same issues – a focus on cooling rather than heating. The future lies in leveraging data to predict energy needs and direct funding effectively.
