Australia's largest freight rail infrastructure project.

About us

Inland Rail is a once-in-a-generation project that will enhance supply chains and complete the backbone of the national freight network by providing a 24-hour transit time for freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Inland Rail will transform the way we move freight around the country, connect regional Australia to markets more efficiently, drive substantial cost savings for producers and consumers, and deliver significant economic benefits. Comprising 12 individual projects and spanning more than 1,600 km, Inland Rail is the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia and one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the world.

ICYMI: We’ve been making great progress along the Inland Rail alignment. A few highlights over the last few months include: - Lifting 85-tonne beams into place at the Seymour-Avenel Road bridge site in Vic. - Moving 7,000 cubic metres of dirt and lowered 320 metres of track during a 100-hour super possession at Wyndham Avenue in Forbes, NSW. - Conducting geotechnical investigations and site surveys in northern NSW and the NSW/Qld Border to Gowrie section. - Installing Australian-first 3D printed nesting boxes for local wildlife at the Seymour-Avenel Rd site in Victoria. - Lifting the 200-tonne superstructure into place at Green Street bridge in Wangaratta, Vic. - Receiving Government approval on the Illabo to Stockinbingal section in NSW.

  • Community input is invaluable in assisting us as we design and build Inland Rail.   Our talented visualisation team builds detailed 3D digital replicas of designs to help community, government and other stakeholders gain a better understanding of individual sections of the project, and as an opportunity for those stakeholders to provide feedback.   In our latest episode of our ‘Focus On’ series, Inland Rail’s Visualisation Lead, Leigh Donoghue, explains how his team coverts thousands of pieces of data into life-like videos, images, interactive animations, and, even, virtual reality.

  • We’ve had an insightful and engaging time at the AusRAIL 2024 conference on the sunny Gold Coast this week. Over the course of two days, we’ve connected and discussed ideas with others in the rail industry, showcased our 3D digital visualisations using VR headsets and listened to a fantastic program of presentations. This included Inland Rail's very own Cathy Duncan and Joel Johnston, who presented an in-depth talk about the important work they do in furthering diversity in the rail industry. We're already looking forward to AusRAIL PLUS 2025 in Melbourne! #AusRAIL2024 #RailIndustry #InlandRail

McConnell Dowell is proud to partner with The University of Melbourne on a first of its kind trial that could revolutionise the way we support local wildlife. The University has developed prosthetic nest boxes, informed by cutting-edge scanned imagery from salvaged, inhabited tree hollows near one of our Inland Rail Project sites in Seymour, Victoria. The scanned data was used by the University to design prosthetic hollows with the goal of providing enhanced nesting and shelter options for local species. By replicating the unique features of these hollows, we hope to boost the uptake of these nests by local wildlife, improving habitat availability and supporting biodiversity. If successful, the trial will provide open-source access to the scanned imagery for use by land managers, conservationists, and in future rehabilitation projects, paving the way for broader environmental benefits. This is just one example of how innovation, collaboration, and a focus on sustainability are at the core of what we do. #CreativeConstruction #Sustainability #WildlifeConservation #UniversityOfMelbourne #InlandRail
