Five statistics that tell the real story of power today: ⚪ Every 10 days, the world spends on military ($66B) what it gives the entire UN system to run for a year ($68.5B) ⚪ China now holds significant influence in more African nations (27) than the combined number of countries that had global influence during the Cold War (13) ⚪ In 2022, we saw 59 conflicts where external states got directly involved - that's more than one new internationalised conflict every week ⚪ 3.3 billion people - nearly half the global population - live in countries where debt payments exceed spending on health and education This isn't just about military might anymore. Power flows through debt, development, and strategic influence.

We create a paradigm shift in the way the world thinks about peace.
About us
We create a paradigm shift in the way people think about #peace. The official account of the Institute for Economics & Peace. We use data driven research to show that peace is a positive, tangible and achievable measure of human well-being and development. IEP is the world’s leading think tank dedicated to developing metrics to analyse peace and to quantify its economic value. It does this by developing global and national indices, calculating the economic cost of violence, analysing country level risk and understanding Positive Peace. IEP aims to empower the academic community, civil society, private sector, international institutions and governments with the knowledge to proactively use peace to achieve their desired goals. We conduct research and education, generate dialogue, and publicise the output of ouractivities with a view to impact the public agenda. We work in partnership with other stakeholders interested in creating peace including academic institutions, business, governments, NGOs and peace institutes. The Global Peace Index is a core asset of IEP. The Institute for Economics & Peace is non-partisan. It enjoys and welcomes association with other institutions that share similar goals. We have offices in Sydney, New York, Brussels, The Hague, Mexico City and Harare. Peace and social cohesion are essential for sustainable development, yet they often receive too little attention and investment. This insightful discussion on fostering harmony through philanthropy highlights two critical takeaways: 💡 Data matters – Measurable insights drive more impactful peacebuilding efforts. At World Vision, we’ve seen this firsthand through our collaboration with the Institute for Economics & Peace, using data-driven tools like the Multi-Dimensional Child Vulnerabilities Mapping (MCVM) to enhance our programmes. 💡 Investment is crucial – Sustainable peace requires long-term commitment and adequate funding. Philanthropy has a key role to play in making peacebuilding a priority. #PeaceBuilding #Philanthropy #SustainableDevelopment #AVPNSummit
Today, I had the privilege of moderating a panel discussion on Fostering Harmony and Diversity Through Philanthropy with @Temasek Foundation CEO @Ng Boon Heong and @Institute for Economics & Peace Founder @Steve Killelea, during the AVPN Southeast Asia Summit. Peace and social cohesion are foundational to sustainable development efforts, yet they often fall to the bottom of priority lists. What can we do about it, and where does philanthropy come in? Two key points resonated with me. Firstly, our panelists emphasized the critical role of data in informing peacebuilding strategies. I totally agree; with measurable data, we can achieve more impactful outcomes, which hopefully will drive more attention and support to the cause. At World Vision, we have had the privilege of partnering with IEP and utilizing 8 Pillars of Positive Peace framework. Where IEP brings data access and state of the art analysis, World Vision brings presence in the most vulnerable communities across the world and the opportunity to implement work that builds Positive Peace at community, regional and national levels. One of the most notable initiatives we’ve had to date is the Multi-Dimensional Child Vulnerabilities Mapping (MCVM) which consolidates multiple forms of child vulnerability over 150 countries, an online portal designed to track, compare, and highlight areas of child vulnerability across the world. For World Vision, this has been instrumental to enhance the scope, targeting and impact of our humanitarian, development, advocacy and peacebuilding programming. Secondly, peace and social cohesion require both sustained effort and adequate funding. We still have a long way to go. As Boon Heong and Steve aptly put it, investing in peacebuilding is an achievable, tangible measure of human well-being and progress. Temasek Foundation is also encouraging cross sector collaboration with initiatives like Harmony in Diversity Fund. Together, let us consider investing in peace when evaluating funding for development projects. #Philanthropy #Peacebuilding #SustainableDevelopment #AVPNSummit World Vision East Asia @World Vision International
