It's Day 1 at the 15th AWID International Forum in Bangkok and we can't wait to spend the week connecting with feminist movements from across the globe. Moments like this are powerful - our movements thrive when we can come together to strategise, learn and dream together. Here are some of the sessions IWDA and our partners will be taking part in this week. Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) #RisingTogether

Last night we were excited to launch our new research exploring a dramatically changing landscape for #FeministForeignPolicy - A Decade of Feminist Foreign Policy: changing trajectories of adoption and accountability over time. Led by IWDA's Research Advisor Dr Liz Gill-Atkinson, the panel explored key findings from the research presented by IWDA's Senior Research, Policy & Advocacy Advisor Alice Ridge with incredible contributions from Daniela Philipson and Niha Pandey. Thank you to the Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria (AIIA VIC) for hosting us for an evening of inciteful discussions on the state of #FFP. Did you know that last year, a woman was killed intentionally by partners and family members every 10 minutes? Or that in 2022 the global number of women and girls killed intentionally was the highest recorded number in the past 20 years? This is why campaigns like #16DaysofActivism are an important time to draw attention to this alarming increase in violence against women and use our collective power to challenge the behaviours and attitudes that make this violence possible in the first place. Because violence against women and girls is not inevitable, it is preventable. Find out how you can use your voice this #16Days: https://loom.ly/8bz-3To. #NoExcuse #EndGBV #EndVAWG

Heard people say #MeToo is over? As founder Tarana Burke explains, you can call this movement for change anything you like, but at the heart of it is survivor-centred justice. And as long as sexual violence persists, so too will the movement to end it forever. This #16DaysofActivism, we acknowledge every survivor of sexual and gender-based violence around the world. You deserve to be safe, loved and respected – always.

IWDA joins global feminist movements in their anger and disappointment at the failure of COP29 to deliver an ambitious and accountable #ClimateFinance goal. The watered down global commitment of USD 300 million is less than a quarter of the minimum amount needed for Majority World countries to respond and adapt to the impacts of climate change. It dilutes the responsibility of Minority World governments to provide public finance. And the goal does not set a global target for #LossAndDamage funding, needed to account for the irrevocable loss caused by climate change. Australia’s voluntary commitment of $50m is a welcome start, but much more is needed. While COP29 did result in an enhanced 10 year work programme on gender, the failure to back this up with accountability for gender-transformative climate finance will undermine human rights-based, gender-transformative climate action for women, Indigenous peoples and other marginalised groups. We stand in solidarity with the #feminist and Majority World movements who have been holding the line in Baku and demanding feminist #ClimateJustice. This year marks 25 years since the international community first designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in honour of the Mirabel sisters – commemorating their lifelong resistance and brutal assassination by the state in 1960. In 2024, we know all too well that women and girls continue to be murdered because of their gender. So far in Australia, over 80 women have already been killed this year as a result of gender-based violence. That’s why days like IDEVAWG matter so much – they are important moments in time to bring our voices together and draw attention to the alarming rates of gender-based violence that persist in our communities. In addition to being an important day for women's rights activists, #IDEVAW also marks the start of the global #16DaysOfActivism campaign. United in our belief that everyone has the right to safety and respect, activists across the world will use the next 16 days to make our message clear: violence against women and girls is never acceptable. Learn more about IDEVAW, the 16 Days campaign and how you can use your voice to speak out against gender-based violence: https://loom.ly/hG2ghMU #NoExcuse #16Days #EndGBV #EndVAWG
