The $658 million redevelopment of Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and the Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is set to revolutionize paediatric health, research, and education in Australia. Interspan was commissioned to fully design and construct 49,000m² of suspended post-tensioned slab, completed over 74 pours. The scope included one basement level and 10 levels of clinical services, operating theatres, and patient wards. Through the efficient design of the hospital slabs, Interspan achieved a significant milestone: saving the client 300m³ of concrete. Building for the Future with Sustainability and Innovation at Barnfield College. Interspan recently collaborated with Gilbert-Ash and structural engineer @BW Murray on the new teaching block at Barnfield College, a 5,780 m² space designed to meet modern educational needs. During the tender phase, we optimised and refined the inherited structural design, leveraging our expertise and advanced RAM Concept analysis software to propose an innovative solution. Through value engineering, Interspan was able to reduce slab thickness from 350 mm to 300 mm. This resulted in substantial environmental benefits, saving approximately 98 tonnes of CO2 emissions by reducing concrete usage across the 5,800 m² of post-tensioned slabs. Interspan is proud to have been part of this landmark project in Galway with the construction of post-tensioned slabs for The Calatrava Building, a critical element of Bonham Quay Phase 2. This development is reshaping Galway's historic Docklands, transforming an industrial area into a vibrant business hub with four new office blocks totalling 34,405 m² of Grade A office space as well as retail, restaurant and cultural space. This project is the first in Ireland to achieve the prestigious One Planet Living Leadership Standard. The Park Street Cambridge development is a prime example of how post-tensioning technology, innovative engineering, and a collaborative mindset can transform even the most complex construction challenges into cost-effective, high-quality solutions. The development, which includes a triple basement for public parking, retail units, and a StayCity aparthotel, was initially designed with traditional reinforced concrete (RC) slabs.
