Your genuine partner in innovative water and wastewater solutions, developed by water, for water.
About us
Who We Are Iota is a genuine partner to the global water industry. Iota's solutions help water authorities proactively monitor and control their water and wastewater assets, reduce operating and maintenance costs, increase customer satisfaction and improve sustainability. As a wholly owned subsidiary of South East Water, we understand all too well the challenges facing water utilities, councils and municipalities globally. In particular, we understand the unique challenges associated with trialling and adopting new technologies and innovation in the water sector. The water sector must innovate, while not compromising its role as an essential service provider. Innovation in the water industry is challenging and authorities often have to accept and adapt products and technology developed for other industries. We believe there is an opportunity for water authorities to play a leadership role in water’s innovation ecosystem and actively design, develop and test new technologies so that they are fit-for-water. Iota is not designed to become a vendor of technology and seeks to transfer its technology and products to industry for local and global impact. Our Business Model Iota has a portfolio of various technologies that it is actively incubating, productising and commercialising for the global water sector, sourced from South East Water as it undertakes its own research and development activities and goes through its digital utility transformation. But Iota is also commercialising intellectual property from other sources such as universities and is open to any game-changing innovation with potential for material global impact. South East Water has a proud legacy as an innovator in the global water industry and so is an ideal place to prove the feasibility, viability and desirability of innovation. Hence regardless of where the technology comes from, it must be ‘proven at South East Water’ before Iota will commercialise.

🌍 Sotto is gaining traction around the world! 🌏 ❓ Don't know what it is... ❓ 🔍 Here's an insight 🔎 In 2009, South East Water – Australian water utility, south east of Melbourne - started their journey toward becoming a digital utility when Melbourne water storage levels reached 25%. To address network leaks, they developed a miniaturised vibration sensor – the Sotto® network leak detection sensor. With almost 40,000 of the new vibration sensors deployed to date, Sotto has been a game-changer in finding network side leaks. Between February and December 2024 South East Water saved 267 ML of water using Sotto to detect and locate network side leaks. Once fully deployed (600,000 vibration sensors), South East Water estimates it will save at least 1.6GL per year (1% of their current non-revenue bulk water purchase from Melbourne Water). Sotto works by taking several vibration samples during a set period to detect water leaks and calculating the median peak vibration to determine a singular vibration intensity score. This score indicates whether a network leak is present. The data is sent as part of the daily meter payload to an IoT platform for analysis and to triangulate precisely, where leaks are located. This optimises the cost to find and fix leaks. Sotto can be implemented at a marginal additional cost when deploying new digital meters. Despite the benefits, many smart metering programs do not include these fully integrated digital meter sensors in their metering deployment strategy. Digital metering is more than reducing costs to read meters for billing, it has the potential to light up your water network with new daily data to detect network leaks. South East Water’s digital transformation provides important learnings for those seeking to begin or accelerate their digital journey and why network leak detection technology should be a consideration. How are you effectively detecting network leaks and saving water 💦 Below is just a snippet of some of the things South East Water's General Manager Digital and Transformation Andrew Forster-Knight GAICD has had to say when explaining Sotto and its benefits. Reach out to Iota if you’d like to learn more.

🚽 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 – such as hilly, rocky or sandy areas – presents significant obstacles for water utilities and councils. 🚽 Similarly, in some scenarios, upgrading outdated septic systems to connect them to modern #sewer networks can also be complex and costly. Low pressure sewer systems offer an efficient, cost-effective solution where traditional gravity fed systems become impractical and with Iota’s OneBox, these systems are transformed into intelligent networks. Iota’s OneBox enables remote, near real – time monitoring and control of low-pressure systems allowing operators to: ✅ 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ✅ 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 ✅ 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 ✅ 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 By providing near real-time alarms and level monitoring, OneBox enables operators to proactively manage potential infiltration or spill events before they occur. This not only saves money but delivers positive environmental and public health outcomes. OneBox transforms low pressure sewer systems into intelligent, responsive networks that deliver efficiency, reduce costs and help protect the environment. Through Iota, utilities can access #technology and #innovation developed by Victorian #water authority South East Water, which has been tested and proven across their network – technology, which is developed by water, for water. Not only that… you gain access to South East Water's learnings and have the opportunity to ask questions of an authority experienced in digital metering and other innovation transformations. This helps derisk and accelerate your own digital transformation. One utility taking up this opportunity is Barwon Water. Recently our Customer Director David Mason GAICD and IoT Test Analyst and Support Engineer Kai James spent the day with Barwon Water’s Smart Networks Section Leader Travis Juffermans and his team in the first of a series of service management design workshops as part of our new #partnership with Barwon Water to expand their #digital metering program roll out to approximately 20 percent of their customer base over four years. The partnership extends to leverage our meter managed services, where Iota is providing service management for our IoT platform #Lentic, including daily system and device health monitoring, over-the-air device updates and configurations, and training and educating Barwon Water employees to upskill their staff through an extended transitionary period. Have any questions about digital metering? Reach out to us! #collaboration In shot are Travis Juffermans and Kai James.

Considering digital water metering? #Digital water meters are great! They come with new pressure and vibration sensor options in addition to basis flow metering for billing. They can now provide near real time insights into a water network to facilitate detection of both customer and network side leaks, to guide proactive maintenance and investment decisions, personalised insights for enhanced customer engagement and more. Digital meters provide exponentially more data than mechanical meters. And data is great… if you’re set up to use it! If not, you become a victim of data paralysis – in other words, your information highway becomes a traffic jam! Ensure your digital metering is a success and avoid data paralysis - talk to us! #technology #water #collaboration
