The Suburban Rail Loop is a game-changing infrastructure project for Melbourne, linking key train lines via a 90km rail loop from Frankston to Werribee. Johnston Project Management & Consulting has been engaged on the Suburban Rail Loop Project since July 2020 to provide project and design management services for Suburban Rail Loop East. Our work initially focused on managing the Reference Design for initial works, overseeing stakeholder engagement with major utility providers, and ensuring the project’s constructability. The role has been extended to manage design through to IFC and assistance with Construction Phase Services. A key milestone was the early completion of the Clayton Sewer Relocation, overcoming inclement weather and service clashes while minimising public disruption. This success was recognised at a Ministerial event, underscoring our role in delivering critical infrastructure safely and ahead of schedule. #JohnstonPMC #JohnstonProjectManagementConsulting #SuburbanRailLoop #Rail #Civil #Infrastructure

In the evolving landscape of infrastructure projects, finding the right balance between workforce commitment and flexibility is essential. As industry faces increasing demands for faster project delivery and innovation, contractors must adapt their workforce strategies to maintain high levels of engagement while providing the necessary flexibility. Research shows that employee engagement directly correlates with productivity and project outcomes. According to Gallup, highly engaged teams show 21% greater profitability and 17% higher productivity. Regular communication is a cornerstone of this approach, enabling teams to stay informed about project goals, changes, and expectations. For instance, tools like weekly check-ins and project updates not only enhance transparency but also encourage feedback, helping to identify and address any concerns early. Infrastructure projects can be demanding, often requiring long hours and high levels of collaboration. Supporting employee mental and physical health through initiatives like flexible working hours, mental health days, and access to wellness resources can significantly enhance job satisfaction and retention. Studies indicate that organisations prioritising employee wellbeing see a marked decrease in turnover rates, which is particularly important in a competitive sector. #JohnstonPMC #JohnstonProjectManagementConsulting #Inclusion #Workplace #FlexibleWorking #EmployeeEngagement

The Airport Elevated Loop Road project is a key development at Melbourne Airport, designed to ease traffic congestion and accommodate future growth by separating public and commercial transport flows. Johnston Project Management & Consulting was engaged by Aurecon to provide expertise in constructability, design management, safety in design, and stakeholder engagement. Our team reviewed the detailed design, prepared construction methodologies, and flagged potential constructability challenges. We also advised on temporary works designs and conducted safety in design reviews, ensuring minimal disruption to critical airport operations. By taking a holistic approach, we helped refine the design, giving the client confidence in both the construction impact and the future functionality of the elevated loop road. #JohnstonPMC #JohnstonProjectManagementConsulting #MelbourneAirportRail #ElevatedAirportLoop #Airport #Government #Infrastructure

Australia is on the brink of a renewable energy revolution, with ambitious targets set by government to achieve 50% of electricity generation from renewables by 2030. However, the rapid growth of solar and wind energy generation raises an important question: Is our transmission infrastructure equipped to handle this transformation? The existing transmission networks, designed primarily for traditional energy sources, face significant challenges in efficiently transferring energy from remote generation sites - often located in rural or coastal areas - to urban centres where demand is highest. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) highlights that the current grid struggles with congestion and reliability, especially during peak production times when solar generation is at its highest. This mismatch between generation and transmission capability can lead to energy waste and hinder the effectiveness of renewable energy sources. To meet the growing demand for renewable energy, substantial investments in transmission infrastructure are necessary. According to a report by the Australian Energy Regulator, around $28 billion is needed over the next decade to upgrade and expand transmission networks. As the landscape evolves, the role of transmission infrastructure will become increasingly critical in supporting renewable energy integration. This includes not only enhancing capacity but also ensuring reliability and resilience against climate impacts. #JohnstonPMC #JohnstonProjectManagementConsulting #Renewables #Energy #EnergyGrid #AEMO

The Structures Rehabilitation Package, part of the $2.27 billion Suburban Road Upgrade, involved the replacement, repair, and strengthening of 11 bridges and culverts across Melbourne’s north and southeast. These works were essential to maintaining the safety and longevity of critical structures within Victoria's road network. Johnston Project Management & Consulting was engaged by Decmil to provide engineering expertise in delivering the complex structural scope. Key tasks included strengthening existing bridges to accommodate increased traffic loads, installing new containment barriers, and upgrading road and bridge surfaces. This partnership with DECMIL and Major Road Projects Victoria resulted in improved road safety, upgraded infrastructure, and a sustainable approach that repurposed surplus materials within the local community. #JohnstonPMC #JohnstonProjectManagementConsulting #StructuresRehabilitationPackage #SuburbanRoadUpgrades #Rehabilitation #Structures #Civil #Infrastructure #Transport

The demand for data centres is skyrocketing, driven by the digital transformation of industries across Australia. As businesses increasingly rely on cloud computing, data analytics, and digital services, the need for robust and scalable infrastructure has never been greater. In 2023, Australia's data centre market is projected to grow by over 12%, reflecting the urgency of developing resilient facilities to support this growth. However, the infrastructure to support these centres often lags, creating bottlenecks in connectivity and capacity. Key considerations include power supply reliability, cooling solutions, and proximity to existing infrastructure. Addressing these challenges will require strategic investment and planning to ensure that the digital backbone of Australia can meet future demands. #JohnstonPMC #JohnstonProjectManagementConsulting #DataCentre #Infrastructure #DigitalInfrastructure

The Port Rail Transformation Project, valued at $125 million, aims to enhance rail freight efficiency across Victoria. This initiative provides a cost-effective alternative to road transport for the 87% of import containers destined for locations within 50 kilometres of the port gate. Johnston Project Management & Consulting supported Seymour Whyte by supplying engineering services to ensure the safe and successful execution of this unique project. Our team focused on constructing two new rail sidings and installing 70,000 m² of container-rated pavement, seamlessly integrating into the Seymour Whyte team to manage civil earthworks, utilities, drainage, track formation, and retaining walls. Upon completion, this project will significantly improve rail supply chain efficiencies, benefiting producers, transport operators, and exporters delivering goods to the Port of Melbourne. #JohnstonPMC #JohnstonProjectManagementConsulting #PortRailTransformationProject #PortOfMelbourne #Victoria #Port #Ports #Rail #Civil #SupplyChain
