Welcome to Jumar Bioincubator, Australia's newest biotech incubator! We are building a world-class hub for innovation translation, research commercialisation and talent development. We’re here to support the next generation of biotech startups, entrepreneurs, and scientists, as they strive to bring innovative health solutions to market. Jumar was established by three of Victoria’s most distinguished entities – CSL, WEHI and the University of Melbourne, with backing from innovation investor Breakthrough Victoria, and operated by Cicada Innovations. Our mission is to connect early-stage biotech ventures with the support they need to progress discoveries towards real-world treatments and therapies, build a critical mass of scientists with the knowledge and confidence to run successful biomedical ventures - and the power to influence and impact global health outcomes. It’s been a whirlwind year—one of growth, challenges, and validation of a real-world problem. Looking back at 2024, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come at 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗲𝘅 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝘀. What started as an ambitious vision to bring real-time, at-home fertility hormone monitoring to life has gained incredible momentum—with even broader applications in hormone tracking. None of this would be possible without the support of our partners, investors and the broader ecosystem. Securing a 𝗖𝗥𝗖-𝗣 grant early in the year was a game-changer, giving us the opportunity to work alongside 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗜𝗩𝗙 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽, 𝗥𝗠𝗜𝗧 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 to push the boundaries of bio-sensing technology. The Federal Government’s commitment to fostering deep-tech innovation was clear and we’re proud to be part of that movement. But what’s been even more exciting is the momentum we’ve built since. The progress and milestones achieved laid the foundation for 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗜𝗩𝗙 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 with additional investment, reinforcing the impact this technology could have on the future of fertility care. And to top it off, we secured an 𝗔𝗥𝗖 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁, further accelerating our technical development. We also made two key moves to strengthen our team and capabilities: • We appointed 𝗥𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿 as our Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), bringing invaluable expertise to guide our scientific and technical strategy. • We moved into the 𝗝𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿, a world-class facility in Melbourne that is already providing the perfect environment to accelerate our technology development. Perhaps the most exciting part? We are already in 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀, turning years of research into real-world applications. It’s been a year of building, learning and proving what’s possible. None of this would have been possible without the brilliant minds we’re working with, including 𝗔/𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻, 𝗗𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗲 𝗭, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗿𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗺, 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗩𝗼𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝘇𝘇 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗿 and the unwavering belief of our supporters. As we step into 2025, we’re more motivated than ever to take this technology to the next level. Packed with insights and valuable data, here are some key takeaways: 💰 Biotech & Medtech ranked as the third most funded sectors, securing a combined $347 million in investment. 🚀 Several biotech startups reported raising money, including Jumar residents: exteRNA, Proxima Bio, Alkira Bio, Immunosis, and 23Strands. 🤝 International investors recognise Australia’s growing reputation for producing world-class startups, particularly in business software, 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵, and Fintech. 💸 While Australia has strong life science VCs like Brandon Capital, OneVentures, and IP Group, the funding landscape remains challenging.
