People with Down syndrome are living longer and healthier lives than they have in the past, with the average life expectancy of a person with Down syndrome in Australia being 60 years of age. October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, helping to raise awareness, break down barriers, and foster inclusivity. Down syndrome is a condition in which a person is born with an extra chromosome, and it can cause mental and physical differences that vary from person to person. People with Down syndrome are just like anybody else, yet often experience challenges in society largely due to ableism. By bringing awareness to Down syndrome this month, we can stand in solidarity with people living with Down syndrome and dismantle the barriers they face.
