KG BOLD Showcase Last night, KG’s very own fashion label, KG BOLD, made a striking debut at the Brisbane Fashion Festival in the Next Gen category for emerging designers. Year 12 students Farah, Tayla, and Solongo designed a stunning black and white capsule collection, featuring bold geometric accents that perfectly captured a contemporary, edgy aesthetic. Huge congratulations to Carol for the dedication and hard work in preparing, supporting, and delivering a collection at this level. The students did an outstanding job and should be incredibly proud of their achievement. Please congratulate them if you see them! KGSC Students Building Their Futures! DEXUS – Waterfront Place Industry Connection Visit Pillar 3 – Community & Partnerships On Tuesday, 6 August, 15 Year 11 Design students attended an industry connection site visit at the redevelopment of Stage One, 1 Eagle Street, Waterfront Place, Brisbane City. The Honourable Grace Grace provided students with advice on entering paraprofessional career pathways in Construction and Project Management, Design, Civil Engineering, Business Management, and essential Trades for the future. John Holland, Australia and New Zealand’s leading end-to-end integrated infrastructure, building, rail, and multimodal transport company, presented our students with insights into the most sought-after career opportunities in the construction industry. Queensland will invest significantly in key infrastructure projects over the next 11 years. The construction sector needs talented individuals—like our KGSC students. What to study? Students should consider studying Design, Industrial Graphics, Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, or Furnishing Skills. Additionally, there will be a high demand for Hospitality workers. From July 1st to 5th, our outstanding students, Rachael (Year 11) and Anika (Year 10), represented Queensland Schools Rugby 7s at the Australian Schools Rugby Championships held at Sunshine Coast Stadium. Under the expert coaching of Mr. Chapman, the Queensland teams achieved remarkable success, finishing 2nd and 3rd overall. On Monday, the Year 12 Film Television and New Media students attended an experience and engagement day, co-facilitated by QUT and Essential Screen Skills. The event was for high school students interested in studying Film, Television, and Animation after high school. Students were treated to a tour of QUTs facilities to see what studying at QUT would look like, and were also treated to two hands on workshops; one on mobile phone filmmaking, and a visual production workshop using QUTs state-of-the-art LED wall production studio. Today marks the first day of National Reconciliation Week. National Reconciliation Week is held between 27 May to 3 June each year. It is a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements and explore how we can all make our mark in Australia’s reconciliation journey. This year’s theme is ‘Now more than Ever’ a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will - and must - continue. The college are committed to embedding Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander culture into our curriculum and value our partnerships and connections with First Nation educators, elders and artists. A big shout out to everyone involved in World Bee Day celebrations yesterday. Today the college hosted the launch of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Young Tech Ambassadors program. With digital careers spanning across all industries and most jobs, the ACS Young Tech Ambassadors program will help prepare students for digital career pathways. ACS has partnered with the Queensland State Government to connect the current generation of digital professionals with the next wave of tech workers in our secondary schools inspiring the next generation to consider the incredible opportunities available in digital technologies across all industries. As a preferred partner of the Queensland branch of ACS, our partnership enables strong industry connectivity and support for KGSC staff and students, informing curriculum programs and providing opportunities for industry-focused professional development and networking. It has been a really inspiring couple of days at the 2024 Department of Education Conference; Spark, create, excel – think global, act local. Delegates and guests heard from global thought leaders and educators who challenged your thinking, offered insights into current trends and ways of working, and provided practical insights into how to support students to think and thrive locally and globally. There were a variety of engaging and impactful session formats, with guest speakers and panellists delivering forward thinking presentations, showcasing successful industry and/or student outcomes; facilitating workshops that transformed inspiration into realistic, practical solutions that could be embedded across schools. The KG team presented on Sustaining Global Competence, ‘Scaling a whole-school approach using the DoE Global Competence framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.’ Together, the Global Competence Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals provide a powerful platform for schools to systematise, scale and sustain initiatives, programs and partnerships that enhance global competence.   The college have a wide range of innovative programs and partnerships aligned to global competence, including First Nations engagement, environmental sustainability, urban farming and food security, cultural diversity and social entrepreneurship initiatives.   Our session provided practical insights into how the college is using the Global Competence Framework and the SDGs to collaboratively develop a more holistic and coordinated approach to global competence.
